Winter Texan Quilt Show winners announced

Winners of the second annual Winter Texan Times Quilt Show have been announced. The quilts are on display at the Mission Historical Museum, at 900 Doherty, and will remain on display until January 24.

In the hand-sewn division, Eleanor Merryfield of Bentsen Grove Resort in Mission took first place with her quilt "Survivor," which took her three years to complete. Helen Bork of Valley View in Mission won second place with her "Baltimore Album" quilt, Beverly Bledsoe of Valley View came in third with the quilt, "Wood Rose," which she made in 1969 while living in Hawaii. Runner-up went to Alma Smith of Heritage Square in Mission. Smith brought a 42-year-old quilt that was created by her grandmother to the competition.

In the machine-made category, Donna Heykoop, of Alamo Palms Mobile Home Park, won first place with a quilt featuring a four-patch stacked Posy on a green backing. Annette Sweet of Green Gate Grove in Mission won second place with "Juliana’s Star," a quilt she made for her oldest daughter. Helen Badgerow took third place with a quilt made entirely of scrap fabrics.

Elaine Elliott was runner-up with a quilt entitled, "Swaying Trees." She used Christmas fabrics to make the trees.

In the hand and machine made category Susan Bender of Winter Ranch in Alamo took first place with her quilt "Heart of Dixie."

Dorothy Hallmark of Citrus Valley RV Park in McAllen took second place with a maroon and gold "Bloomin" quilt she made to give to her granddaughter when she graduates from college. Donna Schmidt of Hidden Valley Ranch in Mission came in third with a quilt she made from curtains she replaced in her living and dining rooms. Robert Echelbarger of El Valle de La Luna, was runner up with "October Sky," a scene depicting geese heading south for the winter.
