Chicken House Opry hosts All-Star Jubilee

The Chicken House Opry, near Mission, will conclude its first season with an All-Star Jubilee on Saturday, March 15, at 7 p.m. Many of the most talented entertainers and musicians performing in the Rio Grande Valley will return to the Chicken House stage for one last, big show.

After hurriedly opening the season with their first show held outdoors on a flatbed trailer, the Opry has come a long way. With the newly-constructed barn completed and enough seating to accommodate a large crowd, the regular Saturday night shows have had a packed house most weeks.

Headlining the season finale on Saturday night will be Thibodaux’s “Big War” and “Ernesto,” the two popular comedy skits that have people laughing. Other appearances include Boxcar Bob and Cactus Willie, the Families Advocating Moral Entertainment (FAME) Duo of the Year and Al Prosser, winner of the FAME Male Vocalist of the Year.

Special guest will be Jim Brommel. "He is incredible," said Bob Reed. "All of the talent here at the Opry has been exceptional. We appreciate each entertainer and each guest."

The talent continues Saturday night with All-American horn player Ike Thurn; FAME Female Vocalist of the Year, Alma Reed; Elaine Nelson, the 2007 Traditional Country Music Female Vocalist of the Year; and two more award-winning musicians: Bill Amundson on drums and Norman Burke on doghouse bass. Multi-talented Bruce Nelson and Western Swing Hall of Famers, Earl Hill and Lee Oliver will add to the all-star lineup.

Bill Hendren, the voice of country classics, is also scheduled to appear at the season finale. Many other professional entertainers are expected to drop by to lend a hand in closing the first season with a Country All Star Jubilee presentation.

Of course the regulars, like the ever-popular Bob "Punjo" Reed and Lucy Jackson, will be on hand for the finale. Reed, who created the show "Punjo Reed & Country Gold," has been on stage with many top entertainers including Hank Thompson, Mel Tillis, Moe Bandy, Leroy Van Dyke, Roy Clark, Jim Stafford, Nat Stuckey and others.

"We are humbled by the success of the Chicken House Opry," said Reed.

The Chicken House Opry is located six miles north of Expressway 83 on North Bentsen Palm Drive, northwest of Mission. Admission is $8 each or two for $15. For reservations to the last show of the season, call 1-501-733-9520 or 479-970-5204.
