Kerry Christensen is superb showman

20110306_Kerry-Christensen_KO_0213While his shows have ended for the season, Winter Texans who have not seen one of his shows are in for a treat next season.

Christensen is a very talented yodeler and possibly the only yodeler to do all kinds of yodels from all over the world, including the very difficult Swiss yodel that uses only the vowels “o” and “u.” During his show he demonstrates yodels from different countries and accompanies himself on his accordion.

He yodels popular yodels such as the cowboy (western) yodel, the Norwegian yodel and many others. He sings old songs like “Heigh Ho” from Snow White, which features yodeling. He even yodels the chicken yodel, which he created for Disney several years ago. Kerry is a former employee of Disney World’s Epcot Center where he worked for almost a decade as a yodeler.

Through special electronics, Kerry is able to sing three-part harmony in some of his songs.

He then switches from yodeling to playing the alphorn (the horn seen in the Riccola commercials). In Switzerland, the sound can go for over seven miles in a box canyon in the mountains. He plays “Amazing Grace” and accompanies himself with one hand playing the bass part of his accordion.

As if the alphorn were not hard enough, he then takes up the zither, which Christensen says is the hardest instrument in the world to learn to play. The bass and contrabass are played with the little finger and the ring finder of one hand, while the next two fingers play chords and arpeggios. The thumb plays the melody. The instrument is similar to a harp and creates a clear melodic tone.

After intermission Kerry played requests. The Auction song and Edelweiss are the most requested songs. Others included the “Cattle Call,” the “Annoying Kuku Bird,” and several versions of  “The Beer Belly Polka,” which Kerry said originated in the Czech Republic and spread to countries all over the world. He demonstrated the Cajun yodel with “Louisiana Saturday Night” and sang a yodeling version of “Rocky Mountain High.”

He ended his show with a tribute to veterans, which combined “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” with “God Bless America.”
