The Texas Citrus Fiesta Parade of Oranges is always the highlight of the two-week celebration of Texas citrus in Mission. This year’s parade will be held Saturday, Jan. 26, beginning at 3 p.m.
Parade-goers will want to arrive early to secure a good viewing location. In the downtown area, non-profit groups rent chairs for $3 each as a fundraiser, but there are plenty of locations elsewhere to set up lawn chairs along Conway Avenue.
The parade begins at Conway and FM 495 (Griffin Pkwy.) and proceeds south past Business 83 all the way to 4th Street.
In addition to the parade, there are several other Fiesta events happening Saturday, with the Fiesta Fun Fair being the center of activity. Located at Leo Pena Park in downtown Mission (across from H-E-B), the Fun Fair begins at 10 a.m. and runs until 10 p.m. And the excitement builds when the entertainment begins at the amphitheatre at 12:30 p.m. The entertainment lineup includes Mission High School Folklorico dancers and eight local bands playing a variety of music styles.
The popular Vaquero Cook-off will take place in Rotary Park, which is just across the railroad tracks from the Fun Fair, at the intersection of Conway Ave. and Business 83. Enjoy a stroll, viewing the chuck wagons and campsite competitions, as well as the smells of fajitas, brisket and pan de campo. If you’re lucky, you might get to sample some of South Texas’ most savory flavors.
The Citrus Youth Show will be in the Mission Chamber of Commerce building again this year – just a block south of the Fun Fair and Vaquero Cook-off – from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Citrus fruit will be sold throughout the day to support FFA and ag student activities. Inside the chamber building, the Fiesta Shoebox Floats will also be on display. But the winners will be announced at noon over at the amphitheatre.
If you’re feeling young and energetic, join the Fiesta Fun Run, beginning at 7:30 a.m., Saturday at Bentsen Palm Community Park. Late registration will take place at 6:30 a.m. on the day of the race and will cost $12 for adults. Call 580-8760 for information.
