Lupita Lopez returns to challenge Cesar Castañeda for top honors

20120202_WTT_LupitaLopezThe grand finale of the bloodless bullfighting season at the Santa Maria Bullring in La Gloria, Texas will be Sunday, Feb. 12 at 4 p.m. For those who have never seen a bullfight, this is the last time this season to see one.

Fans will be pleased to see the return of matador super star Cesar Castañeda. The surprise, however, is that female matador Lupita Lopez will also return to share the card. This will be the answer to the sold out crowd that attended the bullfights Jan. 22 at Santa Maria.

After that performance, Castañeda was awarded four symbolic ears and the crowd loved his dominating style.

Female matador Lopez, also known as the Mayan Princess, was also awarded four symbolic ears. She is the favorite of the Winter Texans and is one of only three women in the world who hold the title full matador.

“Lupita will be returning because of the demand made by so many fans, after her grand performance with tough bulls two weeks ago,” said Fred Renk, owner of Santa Maria Bullring.  “She opened to the first hard charging toro on her knees receiving the huge bull with an over the shoulders pass that scared everybody. Up and grinning, she continued with another series that brought ole's that could be heard for miles. Though her bulls were difficult, she pulled it off,” Renk said.

At the end of the day, the two matadors were awarded the same numbers of trophies. The flowers that were thrown to them were a real compliment to the matadors.

The bulls for this final world-class corrida are from Don Rafael Mendoza and Don Fred Renk, bullring owner and bull breeder at La Gloria, Texas.

The show will again present Ray Duran and Sonia Chapa the flamenco duo that take the fans on a tour of Spain when they perform.
