MOSTH Plans Annual Pioneer Day

20120209_MOSTH_GilletteBrothersJoin in the fun as the chuck wagon rolls in at the Museum of South Texas History. On Saturday, Feb. 18, the museum will host its annual Pioneer and Ranching Crafts Day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Original cowboy music, outdoor cooking, authentic handmade crafts, and children’s activities are just some of the events planned for this special event.

Pioneer and Ranching Crafts Day brings people from the community together.  Year after year, everyone, from Winter Texans to local Valley families, enjoys learning about the region’s pioneer and ranching heritage.

Museum special events officer Melissa Tijerina said, “This family-friendly annual event brings to life the blended traditions, skills, and savory foods unique to the Rio Grande Valley region. We continue to grow the event and invite everyone to take part in this great learning experience.”

New to this year’s festivities are artisans and vendors that specialize in local food and art. Along with Pioneer and Ranching Crafts Day favorites such as pan de campo or cowboy bread, chuck wagon beans, and freshly churned butter, visitors may also enjoy traditional menudo or tripe soup, tamales, and aguas frescas or fresh fruit waters.

Artisans selling beautiful, handmade items such as nichos or decorative boxes displaying religious icons, will also be available for purchase.

Milking a dairy cow, shoeing a horse, and exploring an authentic teepee are just some of Pioneer and Ranching Crafts Day favorites. Watch and learn traditional skills from weavers, a farrier, Native Americans, quilters, wood carvers, and more.

Also, don’t forget to wear a favorite pair of dancing boots. The Gillette Brothers return to make visitors tap their toes to the beat of their signature brand of cowboy music.

Visitor participation is always welcomed and encouraged at this fun-filled event.

Pioneer and Ranching Crafts Day is included in the fee for regular museum admission. Admission is $7 for adults and $5 for senior citizens 62 and older.

The Museum of South Texas History is located at 200 North Closner Boulevard on the Hidalgo County Courthouse square in downtown Edinburg.
