20181128 Lighted Boat Parade 2Captain Phil Calo and his Osprey Cruises boats “can light up Chicago” with the generators on them.

They're not going to do quite that, but it gives you an idea of what they can do with Christmas lights during the annual Port Isabel and South Padre Island Lighted Boat Parade.

“We are fortunate to have that, it makes it a lot easier when we are putting lights and whatever pyrotechnics if needed,” he said. “Plus this is just a great event.”

The annual Lighted Boat Parade begins at 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1. The route begins at the South Point Marina in Port Isabel and there are designated viewing areas throughout the route. Judging of the boats will take place at the new Painted Marlin Restaurant, located at 202 West Whiting, right next to Jim's Pier, located at 211 W. Swordfish St., South Padre Island.

20181128 Lighted Boat Parade 3“This really is a big deal,” Calo said. “We have a great observation area that we call the green, for people to come and set up a lounge chair or throw down a blanket and enjoy the event. We're also going to have an emcee where everyone will be able to hear him announce what's going on.”

The parade is part of Lights of South Padre Island, which includes a Tree Lighting Ceremony, Christmas Parade, Breakfast with Santa and a Holiday Sandcastle Village. The Sandcastle Village will be available for viewing from Nov. 30-Dec. 16 at the South Padre Island Convention Center.

“We participate in this event every year that we can,” said Calo, a Syracuse, N.Y. native who has been working with Osprey Cruises for 23 years. “Our boat is open to the public and you can ride in the parade on it. We have a few seats left and there are some other excursion boats the public can get on to be a part of the parade. It's very neat.”

Though he wasn't sure of the exact number of boats, Calo said that the forecast for Saturday has him expecting several more boats registering in different categories.

To register a boat or for more information, call the South Padre Island Convention and Visitor's Bureau at (956) 761-3000. To see if there are seats available for the parade on an Osprey Cruise entry, call (956) 761-6655.
