The Weslaco Area Chamber of Commerce hosts Winter Texan Coffee Bar inside the Visitor Center Lobby from November to March. Free coffee and pastries, Monday – Friday. Winter Texans can come in and enjoy one of several educational movies we have on the RGV Sugar Growers, Historic Ranches of the RGV and nature videos.

January 20-22 – El Paseo Arts Foundation presents An Audition for a Murder by Lee Mueller at Isla Grand Beach Resort. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., curtain at 7:30 p.m. This is the annual mystery play – the play invites the audience to play detective and win a prize.

January 22 – A presentation on “Artisan Wool Rugs,” by Mr. Wilmer Vasquez and his wife Vanessa from Teotitlan del Valle, Oaxaca, who will explain the ancestral process and tradition of this technique from pre-Hispanic times to the present from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Brownsville Heritage Museum, 1325 E. January 24-26 – The McAllen Convention Center will host their 10th Annual McAllen International Carfest. Carfest will feature more than 300 cars on display, from exotic models to muscle cars, and even celebrity vehicle. Regular admission to the event is $15 for adults and free for kids under 12 years of age. January 24 – The UTRGV Ballet Folklorico presents: Huateque 2020 at 7:30 p.m. at the UTRGV Performing Arts Complex Auditorium, 1201 W. University Drive, in Edinburg. January 25 – SandCamp Saturdays are held every Saturday, from 5 to 6 p.m. at City Beach Access #16 on South Padre Island, weather permitting. SandCamp is an educational project of Sand Castle Island Inc. Participants learn the fundamentals of sand castle construction using kid’s toys and ordinary objects that anyone might have on a trip to the beach, as well as the concept of Unlittering, awareness of sea life, and the life of the coast and shoreline. SandCamp is free for everyone.

January 25 – Our Savior Lutheran Church-ELCA, located at 1105 West Fern Avenue in McAllen, will hold its 14th Annual Lutefisk and Meatball Dinner fundraiser event on Saturday, Jan. 25, 2020. Tickets are $19 for a plate of lutefisk and other traditionally Scandinavian food, including Swedish meatballs and lefse. There will be two dinner seatings, one at 11 a.m. and another at 12:30 p.m. Proceeds raised from ticket sales helps to pay for the church's youth program. January 26 – Our Savior Lutheran Church-ELCA, located at 1105 West Fern Avenue in McAllen, will hold its 25th Annual Polka Worship. Due to the overwhelming attendance in past years, we will hold two polka services in 2020, with the first at 8 a.m. and the second at 9:30 a.m. Please join us for a morning of worship, fun and singing, as Christian lyrics are re-set to well-known polka tunes. February 6 – Alamo Rec Veh Park celebrates the 20th Anniversary of their "Quilt and Hobby Show" from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., 1320 W. Frontage Rd., Alamo. Quilts and Hobby items made by residents in the park will be on display as well as a fabric vendor and a gentleman to do knife and scissor sharpening. A $2 donation at the door makes you eligible for multiple door prizes and a quilt to be drawn at 1 p.m. All proceeds go towards the "Helping Hands Sewing Group" in their effort to provide quilts, lap robes, crumb catchers and hats to the poor and elderly in the area.

February 15 – The International Museum of Arts and Science (IMAS) will hold a Winter Workshop from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Valerie Escamilla will present Milagros Hoop Art. Participants will learn about the folk art and create a mixed media work of art using Milagros, felt, and embroidery. The workshop is $10 and limited to 15 participants.
