VA improves healthcare access

Veterans living in the Rio Grande Valley/Costal Bend Area, who need transportation to and from medical appointments, now can get a ride via VA Uber Health Connect.

"The VA Uber Health Connect Initiative bridges the transportation gap by ensuring Veterans have reliable transportation for their health care needs,” said National Lead of VA Uber Health Connect Indra Sandal, Ph.D. “By offering ridesharing as an additional means of transportation, VA is helping Veterans access the best and soonest possible care — while still achieving cost savings.”

Where do you want to go?

Just a few more days and this year will be behind us. A New Year is just around the corner. I am sure all of us have a special plan, a dream that we want to make come true. What is your dream? Will it be a cruise? Travel to a distant country? Or just explore locally?

Travel seems to be on a lot of people’s minds right now as we are receiving a great number of calls asking what we will offer in 2025.

Organizing a tour does take some time, especially into a different country. Many hotels and attractions are hesitant to commit to a contracted rate. This has always been true but now there seems to be more reluctance as the value of the dollar, the value of the euro and of the peso is so volatile. Just look at gas prices, which have dropped noticeably in the last two weeks. But will they remain lower, or will they go back up again? Just as soon as I can get commitments from hotels and transportation, I will publish the tours we are planning.

If you are wondering about itineraries, look at our website. If a tour in the past has been successful, we generally will repeat that same itinerary. The hotels may change, because sometimes a hotel is sold, a new management takes over, and the service and quality may remain the same or it may drop in quality. When this happens, we look for other hotels, but the itinerary may continue the same with only the hotels changing.

Shuffleboard did slow down a few years ago, but it is making a huge come back and shufflers are shuffling once again. According to an article we published last year, new shufflers are coming in at a rate not seen in many years.

“It’s the shuffleboard resurgence,” said Henry Miller in that article.

Tripp’s legacy lives on through Winter Texans and Elks

Winter Texan Tripp Wright loved Christmas celebrations for children, especially for those who were disadvantaged. Three years ago, he begged leaders of his McAllen’s Elk Lodge 1402 to host a party for them.

The parameters of his Christmas wish were simple: Offer disadvantaged children a wonderful party. And, by the way, make it a yearly affair. Oh … and you’ll need to make it bigger and better every year.

Sharing our love during the holiday season

Palm Gardens The Bingo Bros collecting canned foord for Loaves and Fishes webBy Ruth Filz
Palm Gardens RV Park

“It’s not how much we give, but how much love we put into giving” Mother Teresa.

These words seem the way residents of Palm Gardens RV Park in Harlingen live their lives, but even more so during the holidays. Residents find fun ways to give to others. When our Bingo Bros were looking for ways to make our Tuesday night Bingo games more fun, they also hit on an idea to help others. If you brought a non-perishable item to one of our recent Bingo games, you received an extra card and Loaves and Fishes received items to add to their food pantry. Loaves and Fishes has been around since 1991 when they recognized the need for assisting families in Harlingen and Upper Cameron County and started the local food pantry. They are part of the Feeding America Nationwide Network which distributes 4.3 billion meals each year.

Casa Del Valle celebrates the gift of giving

2023 christmas 3 webSubmitted by Judy Haken, Activity Director

Everyone at Casa Del Valley knows Christmas is in the air when the Giving Tree goes up in the front office. Decorated with tags inscribed with names, gender and gift information, residents can choose a tag (or two) from the tree. They then purchase a gift and return the wrapped gift to be placed under the Giving Tree for distribution just before Christmas.

New Year’s Eve celebrations in the Valley

Just about every park has something special for New Year’s Eve. Many have special entertainment lined up with a dinner. So many of these parks sell out of tickets weeks before New Year’s Eve. So if you didn’t get a ticket in time and are still looking for things to do, there are a few cities having some celebrations you can join in on.

As always, South Padre Island puts on good fireworks show. New Year’s Eve is just a little different, with a bigger show to celebrate the ringing of a new year. Fireworks start at 9:15 p.m. There are celebrations throughout the island at several locations too.
