TavieCORRECTION: This article was published in the Dec. 27 edition of the Winter Texan Times with the wrong show schedule. We apologize to Tavie Spivey and to our readers for the error. The show schedule published with this article is the correct one.

When Tavie Spivey entered the U.S. Army, it was during a time when women had two choices – go for administration or go for medical.
“I chose administration,” Spivey said. “Then I went to a position in recruiting. That seemed to be my niche for 12 years.”

Spivey spent 27 years in the Army, partly during the Gulf War. She said recruiting during a war is difficult. “Nobody wants to sign up during a war.”

But Spivey’s first love – before, during and after the military – has always been singing. “I would sing to anybody who would listen to me,” said the Longview, Texas, native. “I started singing when I was little.”

Spivey is back in the Rio Grande Valley for her fourth year and, for the second year in a row her all-female group, “Shake, Rattle and Roll” will join her for two weeks of shows in February

Tavie and her “Rock-n-Roll Show,” featuring music from the 50s and 60s, has entertained around the country and Europe and has been heard on "oldies" radio shows across the nation and other English speaking countries for many years. She has performed with talent such as "The Coasters," "The Country Comedy Tour," "Jimmy Clanton" (Venus in Blue Jeans), many Elvis tribute artists and at theaters, festivals and convention centers across the country. She has also performed for the "Columbia Space Shuttle Project" and the "Texas Country Music Hall of Fame" among many others.

Her recruiting Army skills probably gave her a boost when she decided to look for an all-female group to make up “Shake, Rattle and Roll.”
“I put an ad in the newspaper asking for females for this all female group and I got to pick the ones I wanted,” she said. “It has worked out real good.”

Spivey’s show is high energy with plenty of jokes and laughter and audience involvement. “I’ll go out into the audience and bring someone on stage for dancing and to bring back memories. That’s what the show is all about, bringing back memories to those years.”

Spivey said “Shake, Rattle n Roll” will also be in the Valley in 2020 for a full month. In between, they will tour Germany and Switzerland in August 2019, visit the base where Elvis Presley was stationed and will be opening at different Elvis festivals throughout Europe. It’s a far cry from a 15-year-old teen singing to anyone who cared to listen.

“I remember while in the Army, playing with different bands on the weekends. I’d make more money in those two days with the bands than the entire week with the Army,” she said. “But I loved it as a teen and I still love it. When you love it, it never leaves.”
