The party everyone has been waiting for finally arrives this weekend.

Party on the Boulevard will be held Saturday, Feb. 2 at the RGV Livestock Show Grounds in Mercedes from 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Admission is free, except for parking, and Winter Texans get $3 off parking with the coupon in today’s issue of the Winter Texan Times.

Event planner Cheryl Palacios has been working on putting the festival together for months.

“We began working on this early last summer,” Palacios said, “and the result is that we are having a hugely successful event that Winter Texans especially will enjoy.”

“It’s going to be a huge festival. We have over 40 real artists from the local area, and even an artist from Denver is coming to be part of the event.” she added.

She said over 200 vendors will be there Saturday, including 50 artisan booths and a wide array of food trucks. Just a small sampling of the wide variety of foods being served up includes barbeque, pizza, tacos, Pineapple Ninja, funnel cakes, chicken, turkey legs, kettle corn, roasted corn, hamburgers, hot dogs and many other favorites.

The festival will have three stages – two of them featuring some of the Rio Grande Valley’s best bands, including Southern Blend, Bottom Line Band, Border Soul and Pelican West. These groups will be performing throughout the day, from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The third stage will be a performing arts stage, featuring folklorico dancers, a choir and other area talent, such as popular country singer Chris Marshall.

They even have a parade beginning at 3 p.m., which will include the Mercedes High School Band, a Pet Parade and antique cars by the Antique Auto Club of America. The club will also have an antique car show during the event.

One of the highlights of this year’s party will be a Dog Bowl, where prizes will be awarded for categories such as Owner and Pet Look-alike, Best Dressed Pet, and Dog With the Most Potential. Those who want to register their pet in the competition can do so online at Most types of domesticated pets are eligible. See the website for the registration form and further details. Application registration deadline is Feb. 1.

There will also be a biergarten, pottery wheels to make your own pottery for free, citrus growing and “Power Garden” demonstrations and carnival games, plus free giveaways.

Admission is free and Winter Texans can get $3 off the $10 per carload parking fee with the coupon on page 5 of today’s edition of the Winter Texan Times.

The event is hosted by Winter Texan Home Sales and sponsored by the Winter Texan Times and other area businesses.
