20180306 GulfcourseRace Mission GU 4387When Winter Texan Times Publisher Jim Brunson told me he was intrigued by the item in the calendar stating Chimney Park RV Resort in Mission was having a golf cart rodeo, and told me to check it out, I had no idea what it was. Now in its ninth year at Chimney Park, I found that the driver and his/her assistant must complete a 150-yard course which consisted of weaving in and out of three milk or water jugs full of water and then circling a plastic barrel in the road twice before pulling into the driver’s pit and the end of the course. The grass on the edges of the course also had intermittent water bottles.

While it sounds easy enough, there is one small problem. The driver is driving blind, wearing goggles covered with Gorilla tape. His assistant is supposed to guide him by tapping him on the left shoulder if he is to go left and the right shoulder if he is to go right. Drivers are scored on the time it took them to complete the course and whether or not they stayed on the track.

20180306 GulfcourseRace Mission GU 4335The first team up was the Missouri Mules, Mark and Sandy. They managed a couple of weaves but ran over one of the bottles in the middle but then got back on course. That is, until they got to the barrel. They went around once but on the second turn, they straightened out too soon had headed into a yard. From where I was sitting I could not tell if they came closer to hitting another golf cart or the satellite in front of the mobile home on the lock. Fortunately, with hundreds of voices yelling “Stop!” they stopped just in time. But it took a little while to get back on the road going in the right direction!

Terry Swanson, who sat next to me, said after going around the barrel twice it is very easy to get disoriented and not know where to go. He said the course looks easy but is very difficult to do blindfolded.

20180306 GulfcourseRace Mission GU 4387Farmers Jeff and Chris fared much better but managed to hit one water bottle close to the barrel. Alex and Jay followed with a good ride and no incidences.

Then came Sugar and Spice. They ran over two water bottles on the right side of the course then pulled so hard to the left they ran up on the grass and they almost hit the Winter Texan Times photographer who was on his knees waiting to take a shot as they went by. Young and agile, he jumped out of the way but still took a bath when they ran over a bottle on the side that was filled with water that spurted in his direction. (I hear he may be asking for perilous pay on similar assignments!)

The Missourians had a good ride while the Hot Bitches caused some spectators to move quickly when they overshot the course and backed up too far. Larry, the driver of the Rowdies, must have had trouble feeling the back taps because Mary was almost beating him to get him to change directions. It must have worked because they had a good ride with no hits.

20180306 GulfcourseRace Mission GU 4547The Wild Ones managed a good ride while Red Flush threatened spectators on the right side of the course. The team of Whatever You want To Call Me, smashed several water bottles and scared some spectators on the right side before making it to the pit. The Bombers caused spectators near the third water bottle in the course to get up and run when they failed to straighten up quickly.

Beauty and the Beast gave some spectators near that satellite dish a fright! Two Canutes caused the ladies near the third water bottle in the road to get up and run again. One of them did not come back to that spot.

Dick and D had problems because she kept pointing to where he was to drive! They had a relatively good ride inspite of that.

Swanson turned to me and said, “I love it when that happens because the driver can’t see where she is pointing. It happens every year!”

Trophy Girl and Larry hit a few bottles and drove so far up on the grass the crowd was yelling “Stop!” Mark and Sandy went so far off the course they almost hit the barn when they circled the barrel.

20180306 GulfcourseRace Mission GU 4570After the event, which ended with no casualties, but a lot of laughter and good humor, prizes were awarded. The Missouri Mules, Mark and Sandy Morrison, were awarded the boobie prize, which consisted of a large pair of crocheted boobs!

First place went to Two Canutes, Jon and Rob Erb, with a score of 1.48; second place went to Wild Ones, John and Judy Kolisa, with a score of 1.56; and third place went to Alex and Jay Marten with a score of 1.59.

Activity Director Linda Olson said it was the ninth annual golf cart rodeo and residents would be looking forward to another one next year. And she thanked Mike Serstadt who announced the event and Ron Egan who created the event nine years ago and acted as chairman and time keeper this year. She invited residents to get in line for the hot dog dinner that followed the event.
