20180111 RGV Concert Band Jack Cook 01The RGV Concert Band has announced its seven-show schedule for the 2018 season as the band celebrates its 20th year of making music.

This season’s repertoire of music includes “The Wizard of Oz,” “Sweet Caroline,” and a “Salute to Bob Hope,” plus marches and patriotic music.

Two band members who played in the band’s first concert on Feb. 15, 1998 are still playing with the band. They are Em Laskey on the flute and piccolo, and Gary Meidt on the trumpet. In December 1998 they were joined by current Director Gene Goede, who also plays the trumpet, and Dick Corle on the tenor sax. Another 10 members have been playing for 10 years.

Twenty years ago, three musicians met at the McAllen Public Library to take the needed steps to organize a community band for Winter Texans. The membership was opened to anyone with a desire to play the old time “concert in the park” type music.

A then-recently retired band director from Weslaco agreed to direct it and within the month there were 12 musicians. The first rehearsal was at Aladdin Villas West, in Mission.

Today, the band has grown to around 65 members and includes local musicians plus Winter Texans from 18 states and Canada.

Each fall about 35 members arrive in time to present a Christmas concert. After the rest of the band arrives they put away the Christmas music and prepare for six or seven concerts to be presented from Jan. through mid-March. Concerts are hosted in various “55 plus” retirement resorts throughout the Valley.

The band’s normal attire is white shirt and black trousers (bow ties for men), but to honor the 20-year birthday the band this year will sport blue polo shirts with a white logo. Following is the band’s 2018 winter concert schedule.
