The United States has a love for parades.

There’s the Thanksgiving Day Parade, the Parade of Oranges, the Parade of Roses, the St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

Every town seems to have some type of parade to celebrate an event, a person or a holiday. There’s just a certain excitement regarding the floats and pomp and circumstance.

Hidalgo has its share of parades as well, especially this weekend as Borderfest takes place and celebrates Spain.

In its 42nd year, South Texas’s largest music, culture and heritage festival “BorderFest.” Each year, the festival has paid homage to a different country, bringing a bit of its culture and history to the Rio Grande Valley.

The event displays a culture of people that revel in unique cuisine, language, arts and crafts, musical heritage and entertainment. BorderFest showcases the diversity of cultures in South Texas, highlighting the rich history and vibrant customs of local peoples.

Three parades are scheduled for the annual celebration that each year selects a different country and celebrates its tradition and culture.

The Budweiser Grand Parade will take place Saturday, March 3 at 10 a.m. A televised Illuminated parade will take place at 6:30 p.m. with Channel 4 broadcasting the event live. The final parade will be held Sunday at 7 p.m.

Of course where there are parades there usually are a whole lot of attractions and this year’s event is not short on attractions. In fact some of the shows will be performing each day. The Welde Bear show performs at 7 p.m. on Friday, and 2:30 p.m., 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The same goes for the White Tiger Experience, the Jurrasic Kingdom Show, the Banana Derby, Inka Wayra Music and one of South Texas’ largest car shows.

There will also be bloodless bullfight inside State Farm Arena on Sunday. A special Sunday package is $25 and includes the bullfight and ground events. Visit for tickets.
