The annual Chanukah Concert and Festival will be celebrated Wednesday, Dec. 5 at Archer Park in downtown McAllen. The festival begins at 5 p.m. and a concert by the world-acclaimed Jewish band 8th Day will begin at 6:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Chanukah, an alternative spelling for Hanukkah, is the Jewish eight-day holiday commemorating the victory of the Jews “against Greek persecution and religious oppression,” according to torah.org. This year, Chanukah is celebrated Dec. 2-10.

The band 8th Day is a popular American Jewish pop band originating from Los Alamitos, Calif, formed by brothers Shumel and Bentzion Marcus in 2004. The band has produced eight albums, with their album entitled “Slow Down” reaching #1 on iTunes World Music chart, #8 on Billboard’s Heatseekers, and #11 on the Billboard Top 100 selling World Music Albums, according to the website my8thday.com.

The group has performed in concerts in Australia, Europe, Israel, Asia, South Africa, Canada, the Carribbean Islands and all across the U.S. They will also be performing at the National Chanukah Menorah Celebration in Washington, D.C. on Dec. 2.
