There’s a new party coming to town.

Party on the Boulevard, slated to be held Saturday, Feb. 2 at the RGV Livestock Show Grounds in Mercedes is more and more looking like the party of the season. The event is hosted by Winter Texan Home Sales and sponsored by the Winter Texan Times and other area businesses.

POTB planner Cheryl Palacios says this will be a huge festival featuring three stages – two of them featuring some of the Rio Grande Valley’s best bands, including Southern Blend, Bottom Line Band, Border Soul and Pelican West. These groups will performing throughout the day, from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The third stage will be a performing arts stage, featuring folklorico dancers, a choir and other area talent, such country singer Chris Marshall.

The event also features a parade at 3 p.m., which will include the Mercedes High School Band, a Pet Parade and antique cars by the Antique Auto Club of America. The club will also have an antique car show during the event.

The festival will feature over 200 vendors, including dozens of artisan booths and a wide array of food trucks.

“We will have tons of food vendors,” Palacios explained, including barbeque, pizza, tacos, Pineapple Ninja, funnel cakes, chicken, turkey legs, kettle corn, roasted corn, hamburgers, hot dogs and other fair food favorites.

“We have 40 real artists from the local area and over 50 excellent artisans” who will have their creations on display for viewing and purchase, she added. Folks are invited to stop by and add their own creative touch to a big canvas painting that will be auctioned to raise funds for Kickin’ for Cancer and the Ronald McDonald House.

One of the highlights of this year’s party will be a Dog Bowl, where prizes will be awarded for categories such as Owner and Pet Look-alike, Best Dressed Pet, and Dog With the Most Potential. Those who want to register their pet in the competition can do so online at Most types of domesticated pets are eligible. See the website for the registration form and further details. Application registration deadline is Feb. 1, no exceptions.

That’s not all. There will be a biergarten, pottery wheels to make your own pottery – free, citrus growing and “Power Garden” demonstrations and carnival games, plus free giveaways.
