20180125 PalmShadows MAS Every month Navy moms across the nation adopt a unit that has requested a morale boost for a program called “Molly’s Adopt a Sailor.”

Since 2016, Palm Shadows RV Park in Donna has created care packages, organized by Ruth Clayton-Davis, a Navy mom who has been organizing packing parties in Davenport, Iowa, since 2011. Many Palm Shadows residents are veterans, veterans’ wives and parents, or have active duty military in their families. This year, Navy mom Ria Richards from Alamo and volunteer Linda Garza from Mercedes also helped.

The adoption in January is for a weapons department on the USS Roosevelt. A “packing party” was held Jan. 21 at Palm Shadows that resulted in 18 boxes from this area being shipped. More boxes are being sent from other locations around the Unites States.

“We ship love! Sending a little bit of home in every package,” is the motto of Molly’s Adopt a Sailor, a nonprofit 501c3 organization that sends letters, cards, and care packages adopting our service members of all branches. Postage will be paid by the organization for the large priority boxes.

Volunteers from Palm Shadows, Alamo, and Mercedes helped pack the donated and requested items including snacks, candy, toiletries, Valentines, and pillowcases. Girl Scouts from Troop 137 sold cookies during the party that were donated to the packages. Each sailor will receive a new pillowcase to fill with items from the boxes.
