20180308 Southern Comfort Bocce JPGWESLACO—The sport of bocce ball isn't going away anytime soon. In fact, the trend that's happening at the Encore RV resorts across the Rio Grande Valley might lay claim to the opposite.

Southern Comfort RV Park, located at 1501 S Airport Dr. in Weslaco, has been running bocce ball tournaments for the past couple of years. What started as one bocce tournament in the park is now up to three and signs are that the growth is going to continue.

“Participation and excitement from Winter Texans is overwhelming,” Terry Hause wrote in an email. “It has become one of the most popular pastimes for the Winter Texans.”

Canadian residents Ugo and Linda Cesario have worked continuously around the bocce courts, maintaining and upgrading the park's four courts. There is open bocce every Friday for Southern Comfort residents from November until the beginning of March. Ugo also has his “famous” hotdogs and beverages available.

Not only that, but the Cesarios host a tournament for the park with 32 teams. They run a full draw and, according to Hause “for the price of admission, the participants and spectators have meals supplied for the entire day.”

The park's management company, Encore, has noticed the revitalization of the sport and included it in the annual Encore games. Southern Comfort is the host park and there are teams from all 10 Valley Encore parks that head to Southern Comfort to participate. Those other RGV Encore parks include Fun-N-Sun RV Resort in San Benito, Alamo Palms RV Resort in Alamo, Country Sunshine RV Resort in Weslaco, Lakewood RV Resort, Paradise Park RV Resort, Sunshine RV Resort and Tropic Winds RV Resort in Harlingen, Paradise South RV Resort in Mercedes, and Victoria Palms RV Resort in Donna.

“As a resident of Southern Comfort we are truly blessed to have such a wonderful couple provide such an event that anyone can play and get to meet our neighbors to make lifelong memories,” Hause wrote.
