20180308 Butterfly Costume Quinta Mazatlan 1McAllen, TX – It’s time to celebrate and educate once again. Quinta Mazatlan will host the second annual McAllen Monarch Festival on Saturday, March 17, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The festival will focus on educating the public about monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus) through family friendly activities such as arts and crafts, music and dancing, face painting, garden walks, informative speakers and scout activities. The festival will also have food and native plant vendors. Children and adults will learn about the life cycle of these amazing and iconic insects.

20180308 Butterfly Insect Costume Quinta MazatlanMonarch butterflies were adopted as the official state insect of Texas in 1995. These butterflies migrate through Texas on their way to Mexico, however, their population has dwindled by more than 80 percent in the last 20 years. This is an incredible loss to the species and can be attributed to the degradation and loss of summer breeding habitat in the United States and wintering habitat in Mexico.

“Every citizen in the City of McAllen, and across the Lower Rio Grande Valley, can make a difference starting in their own backyard through smart landscaping techniques and native plant propagation. Help the City of McAllen bring back the monarch butterfly to its once historic population numbers,” said Coleen Hook, manager of Quinta Mazatlan in McAllen.

The festival offers a Nature Speaker Series including “The Magnificant Monarch” at 11 a.m., “Butterflies of the Rio Grande Valley at 12 p.m., “Caterpillar Care” by Barry Knoll at 1 p.m., and “Butterfly Garden Design for Homes” by Sylvia Barr at 2 p.m.

20180308 Butterfly Dalice 1Over 20 vendors will be offering nature and culture items at the festival, including specialty health desserts from the Home Bakers Market, and Lebby Salinas of Fooducator sharing healthy tips.

There will also be a Native Plant Sale & Chit Chat with and Expert, featuring Mike Heep, of Heep Nursery; James Lovegreen, of L&L Growers; and Betty Perez, of Perez Ranch Nursery.

Butterfly Garden Tours will leave every 30 minutes, led by urban ecologist John Brush and botanist Silvia Barr.
In addition, the entertainment and program includes:

11:15 a.m. – Bug Parade with children dressed as their favorite insect
11:30, 12, and 12: 30 – Dance of the Butterflies by Deborah Case Dance Academy
1 p.m. – Native American Butterfly Dance by the Bear Clan
1:30 p.m. – Recycled Walking Art Show by UTRGV
2 p.m. – Magician Show by Oscar Muñoz

Quinta Mazatlán is located at 600 Sunset Drive in McAllen, one block south of La Plaza Mall on 10th Street.
