20180315 LaFloresta Golf GAIL CATRON MENS CHAMPIONGail Catron, Men’s Champion

La Floresta Park and Golf Course held its version of the PGA Championship March 5-8 with 32 men and 24 ladies competing in the annual event. La Floresta is located at 4140 La Floresta Road in Mercedes.

Gail Catron won the men's tournament championship while Kim Huminski captured the women's tournament title.

The park also held a handicapped tournament in February. A handicapped tournament is one where players of different abilities play against each other on somewhat equal terms. For example, if your handicap is 5 and par is 72, that means on average you are shooting around 77. It is more complicated than that, taking into account courses slope/rating and other variables, but that is the basic definition.

Winners of the Ladies Flight were: Flight A - Meryl Rasmussen, Flight B - Jean Vanderville, and Flight C - Lorraine Trudeau. Winners of the Mens Flight were: Flight A - Dave Millar, Flight B - Rass Rasmussen, Flight C - Roger Goertzen, and Flight D - Carl Ambrose.

Golf is a major activity at the La Floresta RV Park and Golf Course, providing Winter Texans with a variety of competitions and tournaments. The par-3 executive Course is host to daily events that begin at 9 a.m. and are usually over by noon. Cost is $1 and all the money collected is given back to the winners of the event. Regularly scheduled events include mixed scrambles on Tuesday, men’s day on Wednesday, ladies’ day on Thursday, mixed scrambles on Friday and couples play (known as divorce court) on Sundays.

Bob Fuller, who has run the golf activities at La Floresta for over 31 years, presented the season’s prizes and trophies at the Annual Awards Party, held March 10. Then everyone at the park enjoyed pizza from a local pizzeria in Mercedes, Formacio Pizzeria.

Larry and Mona Beers of La Feria, who have been performing country and oldies dance music since 1990, provided the entertainment.
