20180322 El Buen Pastor IMG 5095For nearly a decade, Stan Kirschbaum and Bill White of Hidden Valley Ranch, and Ralph Freudenberg of Mission West RV Park have spearheaded projects at El Buen Pastor Lutheran Church.

The congregation from Westminster Lutheran Fellowship at Pleasant Valley Ranch have collected money and, most recently, built and put up a new cross on the front of the church. It's three-toned blue hues have replaced the denomination's old purple theme and the cross has replaced the old, run down one that stood on the front of the church for about 12 years.

20180322 El Buen Pastor IMG 5119“I guess in 12 years we'll be ready for another cross,” joked Rev. Ruben Dominguez, who has been pastor at the church, located at 1929 Pecan Boulevard in McAllen for the past nine years. “We have been so blessed to have friends and partners like these here who have done so much for us.”

Kirschbaum became involved with the McAllen church six years ago. Since his involvement, some of the projects they have worked on for the church include putting new carpet in the pastor's old office, new cabinets in the kitchen, painting the outside of the parsonage, and last year, installing new doors in the church with stained glass windows.

20180322 El Buen Pastor IMG 5154Each year the groups meet to discuss what project will be next on the list. Now that the new cross is up on the front of the building, Kirschbaum expects the next project may be replacing the church's old bell tower with a new one.

“We enjoy working with the people and having projects,” said Kirschbaum, who has lived in Hidden Valley Ranch for 10 years and is a native of Minneapolis, Minn. “We've developed good friendships and relationships.”

Kirschbaum was the painter for the cross, while White hauled the cross to the church in his truck, and Freudenberg was the carpenter. They were joined by Dennis Schultz, a member of the McAllen church, when it came time to erect the cross.

20180322 El Buen Pastor IMG 5169“Everything we do is done through donations from the congregation,” Kirschbaum said. “When we put up the doors, that was a major project and both congregations came up with the money for that.

“We've developed quite a bond and look forward to helping out every year. This is just something we do to help others and we love to do it.”
