If you ever read something like, “My friend arrived late,” I can tell you how the story ends - “I ate too much.”

This week I visited Costa Messa, – a wonderful Mexican restaurant with three McAllen locations. I visited the one at 5248 N. 10th St., McAllen. I love this place and was meeting a friend for lunch – but my friend arrived late.... you know how this ends.

I love salsa – and at Costa Messa they brought a variety of salsas with their chips. I also dug into amazing grilled jalapenos. I'm a six-time hot-pepper eating contest winner but I'm older now – I like to taste my food. These peppers had a kick, but the flavor was also intense.

I ordered the choriqueso as an appetizer, a beautiful mix of melted cheese and chorizo. I especially love these with the fresh corn tortillas served with them.

After chips and salsa, a chile toreado (the jalapeno) and three choriqueso tacos, I was content. I ignored being content and ordered the Fajita al Chipotle, super tender fajita strips grilled with onions, bell peppers and topped with a spicy chipotle sauce. The grilled onions carried a tantalizing taste from the chipotle, and the juices from the meat. This meal is enough for two people. I couldn't finish it. The food and service is amazing, the way you want to be treated when you go out to eat.

My buddy ordered La Plancha – and after the first bite into it he said, “This is how fajita should be made.” He's a much tougher critic than me.

General Manager Art DeLeon brought a couple of plates to show what's most popular with the Winter Texans, who are regular visitors. One was the Mexican plate, a delicious meal consisting of two enchiladas, a taco and chalupa, served with rice and beans.

Costa Messa has a wide variety of delicious meals to choose from. So, if someone in your party doesn’t want Mexican food there’s plenty to choose from, including steaks, shrimp, chicken, pork chops, fish and soups and salads. The atmosphere is excellent and the food is a dining delight. Just be careful that you don’t eat too much. It’s so tempting, but it was worth every last bite.
