Welcome About the Cover Because of the climate here in South Texas, you have a wide variety of sports to choose from that you can play nearly any time of year. Because of its gain in popularity, many parks have added pickleball courts to their facilities in the last several years. (Pine to Palm RV Resort. Photo by Henry Miller) Just having fun! Some of the daring men got into the spirit of a park’s Hawaiian themed celebration, dancing the hula while wearing grass skirts and coconuts. (Welcome back event held at VIP La Feria RV Park. Courtesy photo submitted by VIP La Feria RV Park) Winter Texans and year-round residents 55 and over get together weekly during the season to play many sports – softball being just one of them. The Ed Martens Senior Softball League holds a yearly Veterans Softball Game in the Fall and a favorite among our Winter visitors is the USA vs. Canada game held in the Spring. (Photo by Henry Miller) The Mobile Home and RV Parks throughout the Valley always have something fun and interesting planned for their visitors. You can find fun activities like turtle races and derby horse races – with all the regalia, but with stick horses – along with events like a golf cart rodeo where the golf cart driver, while blindfolded, is led by their passenger through an obstacle course. Winter Texans have been making the Rio Grande Valley their winter home for over 60 years – enjoying the mild winters, palm trees, swimming pools and citrus groves – not a bad alternative to shoveling snow in the heart of the winter. Add to that dozens of golf courses to choose from with weather that allows duffers to enjoy the game 365 days a year. The RV and mobile home resort lifestyle in the Rio Grande Valley includes activities such as dances, R/C racing, pickleball, line dancing, swimming, shuffleboard, crafts, games of all kinds, potluck dinners and ice cream socials. Add to that professional Wintertainers™ performing almost daily in the resorts and other venues. Whether your favorite music is country, big band, blue grass or rock n roll, there are many talented Wintertainers™ who come down each winter to put on shows for Winter Texans. We have a great time in South Texas! In addition to the activities in the parks and resorts, Winter Texans enjoy local community festivals such as the Texas Citrus Fiesta in Mission, Hidalgo’s BorderFest and Festival of Lights, Weslaco’s Onion Festival, and Brownsville’s Charro Days celebration. Many also enjoy visiting the beach at South Padre Island – a short drive from anywhere in the Rio Grande Valley – as well as many historical sites and quality museums all across the Valley, such as the Palo Alto Battlefield in Brownsville, Museum of South Texas History in Edinburg and International Museum of Arts and Science in McAllen. More and more retirees are discovering the pleasure of birding, and there is no better place in the United States to see over 500 species of birds such as can be found here. Many species, known as Valley specialties, can’t be found anywhere else in the United States. Combine this with the convergence of major bird migration flyways here in the Valley and you have a natural birding paradise. For weekly schedules of shows and other activities in the RV resorts and other venues, pick up a copy of the Winter Texan Times at any resort or Chamber of Commerce office – Valleywide.
