The Alzheimer’s Association will host a walk in the Upper Valley in Pharr on October 19 and the Lower Valley on November 9. Both walks are one mile and open to all ages. All participants must be registered. On site registration begins at 8 a.m. with a ceremony at 9 a.m. The walk begins at 9:30 a.m. Participants will have the opportunity to honor those affected by Alzheimer’s with the poignant Promise Garden ceremony – a mission-focused experience that signifies solidarity in the fight against the disease. The colors of the Promise Garden flowers represent people’s connection to Alzheimer’s – their personal reasons to end the disease. Blue represents someone living with Alzheimer’s or another dementia. Purple is for those who have lost someone to the disease. Yellow represents someone who is currently supporting or caring for a person living with Alzheimer’s. Orange is for those who support the cause and the Association’s vision of a world without Alzheimer’s and all other dementia. “We’re excited to return to the City of Pharr once again and share our mission with everyone in the Valley. The city is really moving forward to educate its residents and make everyone aware of Alzheimer’s, its symptoms and who to contact for information and resources,” said PV Villasenor-Sandell, development manager. “We hope everyone in our community can join us by starting a team to help the Alzheimer’s Association raise awareness and funds for families facing the disease today, take more steps toward treatments, and finally ending the disease.” The walk in Pharr will be located at the Pharr One Center, 1121 E. Nolana Loop. The Lower Valley walk will be held in Brownsville at the Brownsville Event Center, 1 Event Center. Hidalgo County has a 14.8% prevalence of Alzheimer’s in individuals 65 and older, somewhat higher than the state average of 11.9%. And with Hispanics being 1.5 times more likely than other groups to be diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, the sense of urgency is clear. More than six million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease – a leading cause of death in the United States. Additionally, more than 11 million family members and friends provide care to people living with Alzheimer’s and other dementias. In Texas alone, there are more than 459,000 people living with the disease and over a million caregivers.
