This unique store, the first of its kind in the district, is not only a place to purchase exclusive PSJA ISD merchandise, but it also serves as an essential job training site for special needs students ages 18-21 from the PSJA Pathways Toward Independence (PTI) and LIFE Programs. The PSJA Family Shop exemplifies the district’s commitment to creating opportunities for all students. By operating this retail space, students gain hands-on experience in retail management, customer service, and other essential workplace skills that p r e p a r e them for life beyond the classroom. “Collaboration and support are key to the success of this initiative,” said PSJA ISD Supe r i ntendent Dr. Alejandro Elias. “This shop highlights our belief that every student has untapped potential waiting to be unlocked. By providing this real-world learning opportunity, we’re not only fostering skills but also confidence in our students to help them succeed in life.” The PSJA Family Shop offers a variety of items, including t-shirts, jackets, custom gifts, pastries, and more, making it a hub for district personnel and the community to shop for school pride. Students working at the store earn $11.42 per hour, supported by a generous grant from Texas Workforce Solutions. Beyond merchandise, the store stands as a symbol of empowerment for special needs students in the Pathways Toward Independence/LIFE Program. These students now have a platform to gain meaningful work experience and build a foundation for future success. Edgar Vargas, a PTI student, shared his excitement about the opportunity. “I’m happy the store has opened because it gives me and others like me a chance to work. It not only helps us learn new skills but also makes our families proud,” Vargas said. The ribbon-cutting ceremony marked the official opening, followed by a tour of the facility. Attendees explored the shop and saw firsthand the workspaces where students create some of the products available for purchase. The PSJA Family Shop began as a vision to ensure every student, regardless of ability, has a path to career readiness. Now, it stands as a testament to the district’s commitment to providing diverse learning opportunities for all. To learn more about the PSJA Family Shop, visit www.psjaisd. us/familyshop.

OCTOBER 23, 2024 www.wintertexantimes.com 12 WINTER TEXAN TIMES (956)566-1157 ment; National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration; and U.S. Department of Agriculture. The training provides an educational foundation about the unique ecology of the lower Rio Grande Valley given by teachers who are local experts highly rated by past trainees. Classes are Thursday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m., from January 9 through March 27 in Pharr. Half of the field trips will be on Saturdays. They include visits to natural areas, state parks, national wildlife areas, and world birding centers. There will be approximately 23 hours of field trips to choose from. Registration open for Texas Master Naturalist training program Registration is open to join the 2025 South Texas Border Chapter of the Texas Master Naturalist training class. Training will be in-person. Cameron, Hidalgo, and Starr County residents over the age of 18 and Winter Texans are welcome. As a chapter of the Texas Master Naturalist Program, the group develops well-informed volunteers to educate, outreach, and serve in the beneficial management of natural resources and areas in the Rio Grande Valley. Texas Master Naturalist is a unique educational volunteer program sponsored by Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, Texas Sea Grant Program, and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. “Texas Master Naturalist chapters are made up of volunteers with diverse interests who are involved in myriad activities to learn about, work with, and help educate others about the special land in which we live,” said Tony Reisinger, Cameron County Extension Agent for Coastal & Marine Resources with Texas Sea Grant at Texas A&M University and the Texas AgriLife Extension Service. “When nature is left to itself, a unique ecosystem develops – after hundreds of years. Today, that unique ecosystem is what Texas Master Naturalists learn about and help sustain: the Rio Grande Valley’s native habitat and the critters that depend on it.” Classes are taught by local university professors, and other field experts, including those from the Texas Parks and Wildlife DepartSouth Texas Border Chapter Texas Master Naturalist members maintain gardens they have developed as chapter projects. Local community will walk to help defeat ALS® On October 26, people living with ALS, family members, friends, caregivers, and others affected by ALS will gather at Bannworth Park Pavilion for the 2024 Walk to Defeat ALS Rio Grande Valley. ALS, often called Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease affecting nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. It gradually robs people of the ability to walk, move, talk, swallow, and eventually breathe. ALS has no known cause or cure, and the community is coming together to make ALS livable for everyone, everywhere. Hundreds of people will rally together at Walk to Defeat ALS® to fuel the mission and support people living with ALS in the region. Many who participate have a loved one who is battling ALS while others walk in memory of a loved one who has lost their fight. Some participate simply because they believe in the power of community and want to make a difference for those impacted by ALS. “Our Walk to Defeat ALS events bring the ALS community together, providing hope and inspiration for those impacted by ALS. Thanks to your generosity and support, we can fund global research, nationwide advocacy efforts, and local care services. All of these efforts are critical to making ALS livable until we can find a cure.” said Calaneet Balas, president and CEO of the ALS Association. With only two to five years to live, individuals living with ALS have an urgent need, and the community is stepping in to fill it by participating for those who cannot. By keeping non-essential lights off, treating glass where collisions occur, and designing buildings to be bird friendly from the beginning, Prestridge said Texans can help reduce window strikes and normalize awareness and support for billions of migratory birds. For the story with full links, visit https://agrilifetoday.tamu. edu/2024/09/12/three-ways-toprotect-migratory-birds-this-fall/. Lights Out, Texas! Has other ways to help if you visit their link in the story. Three ways to protect migratory birds this fall For Texans, saving millions of migratory birds could be as simple as flipping a switch. Each year, nearly two billion birds migrate through the Lone Star State. Many of the migratory species use the night sky as a tool to navigate through the state and back to their homes and breeding grounds. However, nighttime light pollution has become a growing challenge for many birds, leading to high rates of building strikes and migratory bird deaths. Lights Out, Texas! is an initiative focused on reducing bird losses to building strikes by enlisting the help of Texans. Heather Prestridge, a curator in the Texas A&M Department of Ecology and Conservation Biology at the Biodiversity Research and Teaching Collections, BRTC, shared three keyways you can help birds during the southern migration window this fall. No. 1: Turn off unnecessary lights Birds are attracted to urban centers as they make their migratory flights at night, but they become disoriented by the lights. “What’s important is to understand that non-essential lighting has a negative impact on wildlife year-round,” Prestridge said. “Lights Out, Texas! began as a campaign for making sure Texans flip the switch during peak bird migration in the spring and fall, but in reality, we should be practicing Lights Out year-round.” No. 2: Consider treating your windows According to a study in Annual Reviews, an estimated one billion birds are lost to collisions with buildings. One of the key causes is birds’ inability to detect glass. “Often, glass is reflective of the trees and sky around it which lures birds to collide with buildings,” Prestridge said. There are a variety of options to help mitigate this issue, such as patterned glass and film that aides in making these surfaces more bird friendly. No. 3: Donate to the Collection of Birds at BRTC The Collection of Birds at the BRTC serves as the repository for all the birds found during Lights Out, Texas! collision surveys. These specimens amount to thousands of birds per year that are carefully documented and utilized for a variety of research purposes, not just migratory bird fatalities. Philanthropic donations to BRTC will help support bird categorization and the preservation of research for scientists and students who access the collection. “Funds are needed for student Migratory species traveling long distances face the most challenges, especially when traveling over or near large cities where light pollution is most common.
