This unique store, the first of its kind in the district, is not only a place to purchase exclusive PSJA ISD merchandise, but it also serves as an essential job training site for special needs students ages 18-21 from the PSJA Pathways Toward Independence (PTI) and LIFE Programs. The PSJA Family Shop exemplifies the district’s commitment to creating opportunities for all students. By operating this retail space, students gain hands-on experience in retail management, customer service, and other essential workplace skills that p r e p a r e them for life beyond the classroom. “Collaboration and support are key to the success of this initiative,” said PSJA ISD Supe r i ntendent Dr. Alejandro Elias. “This shop highlights our belief that every student has untapped potential waiting to be unlocked. By providing this real-world learning opportunity, we’re not only fostering skills but also confidence in our students to help them succeed in life.” The PSJA Family Shop offers a variety of items, including t-shirts, jackets, custom gifts, pastries, and more, making it a hub for district personnel and the community to shop for school pride. Students working at the store earn $11.42 per hour, supported by a generous grant from Texas Workforce Solutions. Beyond merchandise, the store stands as a symbol of empowerment for special needs students in the Pathways Toward Independence/LIFE Program. These students now have a platform to gain meaningful work experience and build a foundation for future success. Edgar Vargas, a PTI student, shared his excitement about the opportunity. “I’m happy the store has opened because it gives me and others like me a chance to work. It not only helps us learn new skills but also makes our families proud,” Vargas said. The ribbon-cutting ceremony marked the official opening, followed by a tour of the facility. Attendees explored the shop and saw firsthand the workspaces where students create some of the products available for purchase. The PSJA Family Shop began as a vision to ensure every student, regardless of ability, has a path to career readiness. Now, it stands as a testament to the district’s commitment to providing diverse learning opportunities for all. To learn more about the PSJA Family Shop, visit www.psjaisd. us/familyshop.
