Winter Texan Times

NOVEMBER 20, 2024 www.wintertexantimes.com 12 WINTER TEXAN TIMES (956)566-1157 Let’s get in the holiday mood with lights Thanksgiving is fast approaching, and it is time to think about the menu and make a plan to order, or buy, all the fixings. If your family is like most families, the menu has become a tradition. Besides the turkey what is on your list? In my family – besides the turkey, we make cornbread dressing, homemade cranberry sauce and several kinds of pies. Every member of the family has a favorite and wouldn’t you know it… It must be pumpkin for one person, pecan for another and even a blueberry for the third. One year I could not remember which pecan pie recipe was the best, so I made three pecan pies. I have been very busy lately. My bookkeeper and Gloria, the one who generally answers the phone are both ill or have family members who are seriously ill. I have been trying to take care of three positions. Please be patient and please keep my helpers in your prayers. I will get dates and prices just as quickly as I can. You can expect all the tour costs to increase. Gas is more expensive, automotive repairs and parts have increased. The cost of living is more than it was a year ago. Rest assured that I will cost the trips as economically as I possibly can. The Hill Country Christmas in Fredericksburg is always a favorite destination. You can be dreaming of that tour scheduled to depart around December 6. The next big event will be the San Antonio Rodeo scheduled in February. The rodeo keeps adding new entertainers. Choosing the most popular entertainer is always a challenge for me as I rarely listen to country music. I need your help on this one. Who is your favorite? Let me know who you think is the best. Call me on my cell – (956) 536-1242. Or send me an e-mail – joliston@gowithjo. com. I had heard many good reports on the Christmas lights in the Hill Country so last year I decided to spend Christmas with my daughter who lives in that area. Was I ever thrilled. Cars were lined up for blocks to see the Christmas lights around the square in former President Johnson’s hometown. The cars generally drove around the main square at least twice as one look was just not enough. This tour will be planned to leave the first week in December...just in time to put you in the Holiday Mood. Mexico also goes all out to decorate and celebrate for Christmas. Every town will have a parade reenacting the night when Joseph and Mary searched for a place where the Baby Jesus would be born. It has been a real pleasure for me to visit Bethlehem and the place where Christ was born. It is truly special to be able to see the hollowed out stone feeding trough that was his first bed. You may have imagined what it looked like. I never imagined it would be a small feeding trough made of stone. Today the Church of the Nativity is built over his birthplace. Even the sides of the multi-storied buildings in downtown Mexico will be covered with Christmas decor from huge red poinsettias to other Christmas motifs. Streets in the downtown area will be lined with booths selling Christmas candies and gifts. Many of the booths will have a live Santa Claus. Every church will have a manger scene. It is traditional for the families to go to midnight Mass on Christmas Eve and then return home for a special meal. Since everybody is up late, most everyone sleeps in on Christmas Day and very few stores or attractions will be open. 2 to 4:30 p.m., every Sunday, at Bannworth Park, 1822 N. Shary Rd., in Mission.
