Probably two of the celebrations that attract the most attention and attendance are the Holiday Village in Brownsville at Dean Porter Park and the McAllen Parade with their gigantic balloons generally held at the local high school stadium. Either of those venues are worth your time and will certainly put you in a holiday mood. If visiting Brownsville and viewing the Holiday Village fits into your plans just remember there are many other people with the same idea, parking spaces close to the event will be at a premium. I was not able to find a close parking place the year I went. Why not go early and visit Gladys Porter Zoo? It should be easier to find close parking earlier in the day. The zoo is of top quality and worth a visit. You can even feed the flamingos or the giraffes. If you get hungry there are food booths, or you could even take a sack lunch to enjoy in the nearby park. Many of us will have relatives and friends visiting for the holidays. And of course, that calls for extra preparations, especially in the category of food. I will be very lucky this year as my special guests for Thanksgiving will be my great nephew and his twelve-year-old son. The nephew wins prizes and generally first place in competitive cook offs. Since he drives a pickup he will be bringing his own barbeque pit that will be holding a turkey that he intends to smoke along with all the extra vegetables he will prepare on the grill. My contribution will be to prepare the desserts - pecan pies and pumpkin pies. I think I will even try an apple pie. On previous visits, we have visited the beach and Space X. Since the Holiday Village will be opening on the Monday before Thanksgiving and my company will be arriving on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, Gladys Porter Zoo and the Holiday Village will be the extra entertainment for my guests. What fun! I can hardly wait. HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL! What would Christmas be without a Gingerbread Bakery. Photo by Herb Moering, 2019
