We just did and finished our Christmas shopping. I hope you are caught up with everything you need to do before Christmas Day. We have hopefully bought all the groceries we need for next week as well. We might have to go back for some veggies this weekend, or maybe some extra sweets (shhh… don’t tell Dan). We’ve been cutting down on the sugar intake around here, so I haven’t done any of my usual baking. So, it feels a little odd, but I am not stressed to get plates of cookies or anything out to friends and family. Do you do any special treats for your friends for Christmas? What are your favorite treats during the holidays? What also feels odd is not having tamales. It’s a Christmas tradition – that and hot cocoa. But like I said, we’ve been cutting out the sugars, and that includes carbs. It’s okay though. We’re doing good and still enjoying the holiday season. I made a decent low The Hidalgo Festival of Lights has become a regular Christmas season must see. With millions of Christmas lights, trolley tours, dinner, carnival rides and entertainment, there is plenty to do and see for everyone. The festival officially began with the lighting of the tree on December 7 and runs through Sunday, January 5. This year’s theme is Under the Sea. Hours of operation are Monday through Thursday, 6 to 10 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 6 to 11 p.m., and Sunday, 6 to 10 p.m. From December 20 through January 5, See LIGHTS pg. 20 Festival of Lights brings Under the Sea to you Hidalgo Festival of Lights. This year, they collected more than enough to fill 280 stockings for young children, and 20 stockings for infants. Bob Coakley, a chaos coordinator at Winter Ranch, said about 20 volunteers showed up to stuff the stockings once they had all the donations gathered. Tables in the rec room were filled with the items park residents had donated. People in the parks gathered food based on an Advent food calendar. The idea started with a Facebook article that DaLeen Markel saw and shared with fellow resorter Rick Anderson. Last year was a success, and this year was just as successful, or even more so, with over 1,200 pounds of food collected on Saturday morning, December 14. This could not have happened without the people of the parks opening their hearts to be able to give back to people who might now have a better Christmas. The food was donated to the local food bank, located within the First Global Methodist Church. Rick Anderson, the organizer for this event for the second year would like to thank all the people who helped gather the food and deliver the items to the food bank, as well as the people who donated the food items. Rick hopes that this continues next year, even bigger and better. 5 WINTER TEXAN TIMES www.wintertexantimes.com DECEMBER 18, 2024 Valley museums share the festive spirit Our Rio Grande Valley museums supply arts, history and culture to their visitors throughout the year. But during the Christmas season, they also share creativity and bright lights. Several museums have Christmas tree exhibits. They get the community to bring and decorate a tree, usually to a certain theme. You can be sure to see lots of color and lights as organizations pick a theme that represents them, the city, or their heritage. Harlingen Arts and Heritage Museum has their Christmas Tree Extravaganza on display through December 31. They will also have the Lon C. Hill Home, Paso Real Stagecoach Inn, and the old Harlingen Hospital decked out in Christmas décor. Their regular hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The museum is located at 2425 Boxwood Street. You can find out more information about their exhibits online at https://www.facebook. com/harlingenmuseum or by calling (956) 216-4901. The IMAS Guild invites community members to visit this year’s Christmas Tree Forest themed Celebrating the Arts. This year participating foresters were asked to choose a particular artist, artistic movement, fiber arts sculpture, architecture, etc. to celebrate the various arts. It is a long-standing tradition for all ornaments to be hand-made. The exhibit showcases the creativity and ingenuity of the community from preschoolers through adult groups. The Christmas Tree Forest will be on display through January 2. The hours of operation are Wednesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, 1 to 5 p.m. IMAS is located at 1900 W. Laguna Vista, Laguna Heights, Port Isabel, South Padre Island and south to the Rio Grande River are within the Coastal Tip Circle. Weslaco Circle includes Donna, Mercedes, La Feria and south to Progresso. Novice birdwatchers are encouraged to join a team. Extra eyes help spot birds for the experienced birders to identify; the more novice birders get valuable experience in bird identification and habits. In addition, individuals can count birds in their own yard if it is within one of the designated areas. Contact one of the above teams to find if your yard is within a designated area. A list of birds and information will be sent upon request. If you have a yard full of birds in a count area, invite a team; they may be able to visit on count day. Check this link to see the area of a count: https://gis.audubon.org/ christmasbirdcount/ In its 125th year, the bird count tradition dates to when officers in the then newly established Audubon Society proposed to take a census of birds rather than hunt them for sport. Globally, the Audubon Society Christmas Bird Count includes destinations and countries from as far north as the Artic Bay, east from St. Jon’s and Ferryland in Newfoundland, west to Southern Guam, and from the northern most area of Alaska, south through Canada, the U.S., Mexico, South America and down to Drake Passage in the South Atlantic Ocean. The annual count is a citizen science survey where volunteer bird watchers provide the census data. The event is conducted by the National Audubon Society, an environmental organization devoted to the conservation of birds. Red Kettle donations help all year round During this holiday season, The Salvation Army staff and volunteers are diligently working to raise much needed funds to support those most in need this Christmas, and beyond. This year, The Salvation Army seeks to raise $175,000 to meet the growing demand for essential services in the McAllen community and is falling behind its goal. Every year, The Salvation Army of McAllen provides shelter, meals, emergency financial assistance, clothing vouchers, food boxes, disaster assistance and more to individuals and local families. The holiday season can be especially difficult for many, and donations are crucial to ensuring that no one is left behind during this time of year. “The holiday season brings unique challenges for many in our community, but it also brings out the generosity of those who can help,” said Major Frankie Zuniga, with The Salvation Army of McAllen. “Every donation, no matter the size, is a step toward lifting someone out of hardship and it is important to remember that every dollar given stays local, helping your neighbors in need, right here in McAllen. Your generous support helps bring hope and stability to those who need it most — not just during Christmas but also throughout the entire year.” Funds raised during the holiday season support initiatives like the Angel Tree program, which provides clothes and toys to children and seniors. Donations also help provide year-round aid such as rent, utility, and housing assistance for individuals facing financial hardship. “We are currently falling behind our fundraising goal and ask the community and local businesses to help us in the remaining two weeks of the red kettle campaign. The economy is challenging for many right now, and perhaps you are not in the financial position to give what you might have done in the past,” said Zuniga. “A wonderful way to help The Salvation Army is to volunteer and ring the bell, and it costs nothing. We desperately need bell ringers and would love to set you up with an apron and bell and have you ring for a couple of hours. You can ring for two hours, a morning or afternoon, or the entire day. Best of all, you’ll be making a difference in the lives of people you will probably never meet, who come to The Salvation Army every day for help.” Here are several ways to give and get involved with The Salvation Army of McAllen this holiday season: ● Donate online at www.SalCourtesy photo

This special Thanksgiving Turkey Distribution was funded in part through the generous sponsorship of Tito’s Handmade Vodka and brought together by 100 volunteers dedicated to ensuring local families could enjoy a hearty holiday meal. The distribution featured not only turkeys but an array of essential items to create balanced holiday feasts. Families received household staples including bread, eggs, cereal, bags of potatoes, fresh produce, and canned goods. The initiative highlighted the strength of community partnerships and volunteerism, showcasing the impact that a collective effort can have on food security in the region. Thousands of volunteers contributed to Operation Christmas Child, a project of Samaritan’s Purse, by packing shoeboxes filled with fun toys, school supplies, and personal care items. The global Christmas project will deliver these gift-filled shoeboxes to children in more than 100 countries, including many who are suffering from war, poverty, disease and disaster. Each shoebox is an opportunity to share the message of the Gospel and bring hope to children in need around the world. Although drop-off locations have closed for the season, there is still time to share hope and love with children overseas by packing a gift-filled shoebox online. Shoeboxes built online go to some of the hardest-to-reach areas in the world. Those who prefer the convenience of online shopping can browse samaritanspurse.org/buildonline to select gifts matched to a child’s specific age and gender, then finish packing the virtual shoebox by adding a photo and personal note of encouragement. For more information on how to participate in Operation Christmas Child visit samaritanspurse.org/ occ. Shoebox gifts are sometimes transported via elephants in Zimbabwe. Photo courtesy of Samaritan’s Purse Mission Historical Museum accepting quilt entries Mission Historical Museum would like to remind readers that they are celebrating their 19th Annual Quilt Show and are now accepting entries for this beloved community tradition.
