After a brief hiatus, and the passing of the previous owner Fred Renk, the bullring is back at it with a new owner and lots of updates. As the new owner says, the calls kept coming from people wanting to know when they were going to open. When shows were going to start again. They decided to make their customers happy and begin with a grand show. The grand opening will feature Cayetano Delgado from Monterrey, Mexico. Delgado is not new to Santa Maria Bullring. He grew up in the bullfight world, as his father was a matador, and matador David Renk, ‘El Texano,’ was his godfather. Delgado began his career in the bullfighting world at age 13. He had the help of many people to get where he is today. In a previous story about Delgado, it was said it came to almost $400,000 in five years for Delgado’s travel, training, suits, equipment, food, and everything else he needed to become a matador. He even received training in Spain. He fights with all the defensive training he has received. He continues his style of taking chances with the bulls. Dancing with them in the ring, looking at them straight in the eye before pitching his cape over his head and shoulders, dodging as the bull runs toward him. He has gained a lot of attention through his performances, from fans and press alike. Come and watch him at the Santa Maria Bullring, home of the World Class Bloodless Bullfights. Also performing will be Luigi Mercury from CDMX, Mexico. The matadors will be up against the bulls of Miguel Nunez. Miguel Nunez said the bullring has had a lot of changes. They have updated the stands, put in a stage for entertainment, and tables for VIP. He said it’s like a new place. For those unfamiliar with Santa Maria Bullring, these are bloodless bullfights. Bullfights are always an exciting event. In Hispanic culture the bullfight is considered more like a ballet than a sport because of the intricate moves the matador must make in order to subdue the bull and bring him to the point of the symbolic kill. But there are bulls that refuse to do the ballet and make the bullfight considerably more dangerous for the matador. Here, the matador has to remove a Velcro-attached rose from the bull’s back making the symbolic kill. The Bullring opens at 1 p.m. and the bullfight starts at 4 p.m. on Sunday, January 5. There will be food, beverages, entertainment and more all afternoon. Make reservations by calling (956) 476-1588. You pay when you arrive.
