Biscuits & Gravy: Where comfort and food come together Biscuits & Gravy Neighborhood Kitchen has been a hit with Winter Texans and a personal favorite from the first biscuit served. But that is not all you’ll find to love when you visit. If you haven’t been there yet, you will want to try to hurry over early and often this season. While they are known for their namesake biscuits and gravy, they do have a wide assortment of breakfast dishes and great lunch offerings as well. But since breakfast is the most important meal of the day and my personal favorite, we of course had to drop in early one day. While waiting for our meals to arrive, we were each given a sample of their signature dish – biscuits and gravy. It was exactly like grandmother used to make – or dare I say, even better. If you are looking for something a bit bolder, check out these options that bring the flavor with a spicy flair. There’s their spicy chicken sandwich with an option of grilled or fried chicken served on Texas toast with lettuce, tomato, and onion, served with fries. Or Jr.’s Breakfast sandwich topped off with ranchero sauce, scrambled egg, sausage patty, slice of tomato, and cheese on a hamburger bun, served with hashbrowns. Also, Ryan’s Messy Hashbrowns – hashbrowns with bell peppers, cheese, bacon bits, grilled onion, topped with two eggs. And there is new merchandise such as shirts, mugs, and baby onesies that make great gifts. Everything we have tried tastes like good southern home cooking. We felt reminiscent of being on the farm eating a good, hearty country meal in grandma’s kitchen. It is a place we like going back to time and time again – even if it’s just for biscuits and gravy. Biscuits & Gravy Neighborhood Kitchen is a family owned and operated local restaurant located at the Val Verde Flea Market at 935 W. Hwy Bus. 83, Suite 9 in Donna on the corner of Bus. 83 and Val Verde Rd and is open seven days a week from 7 a.m. until 2 p.m. was a grapefruit grove, and farmland was all around. In the hot summer of 1984, plumbing and electricity were installed, and a few buildings were built, mainly to support construction. On November 1, the property was complete enough to begin registering guests. A ribbon cutting ceremony took place on January 4, 1985, officially opening Trophy Gardens RV Resort. From the first open house, where interested Winter Texans were given free food and shown around the property, Trophy Gardens grew, finding in the second season that every open site in the park was filled. Over the last four decades, Trophy Gardens has been a part of the Alamo community, not only having individuals return year after year, but also families returning generation after generation. As a part of the 40th Anniversary celebration, current guests and staff at the park reminisced about its history, shared stories of how some of them came to be a part of the community, played a slide show depicting many of the fun activities and adventures its residents enjoyed over the years, and even viewed a videotaped message from the park’s first manager, Bonnie Christian. Although Bonnie could not be with us during the celebration due to family commitments, she will be back in Trophy Gardens later this month, her 40th year at Trophy Gardens. The trip down memory lane ended with a challenging Trophy Gardens trivia as cake was served. In addition to the current park manager, Dan Rockwood, involved in the celebration were several Alamo officials, including Mayor Garza, multiple commissioners, the Chief of Police, the Fire Chief, and the head of the Chamber of Commerce. It was a great honor for all these people to take time from their busy schedules to join us. To quote from the City of Alamo Facebook page, “For four decades, this special place has been more than just a park; it’s been a home, a family, and a cornerstone of Alamo’s Winter Texan community.” It could not have been said any better.
