VSA From pg. 1 GPZ welcomes towering giraffe The Gladys Porter Zoo is thrilled to announce the debut of an extraordinary new member to its giraffe herd. Malcolm is a towering male giraffe that stands approximately 17 feet tall, making him one of the largest giraffes to ever be housed at the Gladys Porter Zoo. The impressive young giraffe, transferred from Zoo Miami, brings excitement and wonder to the Zoo’s Giraffe Landing Feeding Experience. Gladys Porter Zoo’s Curator of Mammals, Walter DuPree, expressed enthusiasm about the new addition, highlighting the significance of this remarkable animal. “I truly hope our guests come out to see Malcolm. Although they may think our giraffes at the feed station are large, they will be amazed at how REALLY big Malcolm is. And he’s a sweetheart! We are positive that they will quickly fall in love with him.” Staff have noted that Malcolm quickly acclimated to being fed by visitors at the Giraffe Landing Feeding Experience, and so they have enjoyed their opportunity to marvel, up-close, at this majestic creature. Gladys Porter Zoo continues its commitment to animal conservation, education and providing exceptional care for its diverse collection of animals. The new male giraffe represents another milestone in the Zoo’s ongoing mission to contribute to the breeding and conservation of giraffes while educating and inspiring the next generation to help preserve wildlife and the habitats upon which they rely. All giraffes are listed as Endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species. Populations in the wild are declining rapidly due to habitat loss, especially for agricultural use. Located in Brownsville, the Gladys Porter Zoo is dedicated to conservation, education, research and providing memorable experiences for visitors of all ages. You can find out more information about the zoo online at www. gladysporterzoo.org. Photo courtesy of Gladys Porter Zoo.
