Many attendees showed up early to save front row seats before enjoying a lunch provided by Mission Bell. The entertainment for the event was ready to play and, well, entertain the crowd in between award announcements. This year, attendees were able to see a couple of new faces they might not have seen before. Photo by Carina Brunson We had an exciting week last week. We hosted our Valley Star Awards where we were able to listen to some great entertainment and give your favorites some awards. It’s always a great event. It’s always fun to be able to hang out with our readers and with our Wintertainers™. We enjoy the time we spend with you and the joy you have in seeing your favorites win. We love that each year is different – we never know who is going to win until we count up the ballots just a few days before the event. We love it when it’s a new face or seeing someone that has been performing for years finally get to win something. We have a few favorites of our own, but we love ALL of our Wintertainers™. We love having the chance to recognize them each year. We’re already planning next year’s show. So, make sure to look for the dates and who will be entertaining for that show.

Their performance will be on Tuesday, February 25 from 6 to 8 p.m. The show features Leslie Blasing and Rick McEwen. Leslie Blasing has been performing on South Padre Island and throughout the RGV Winter Texan parks for a number of years. She always draws a crowd with her huge vocals. She is a regular at a few places on SPI. Leslie sings a wide array of music from the 1950s to today’s country, rock, rock n’ roll and more. Rick McEwen is widely known as The Gambler. He performs his Kenny Rogers show, and more, throughout the Valley and in Branson. During his shows, he often performs the ever-popular Islands in the Stream and tries to include a volunteer from the audience to sing Dolly Parton’s part. At one recent show, he had over six Dolly Parton’s wanting to sing with him. Together they have become The Lady and The Gambler performing some singles, a little bit of country, a little bit of rock n’ roll, and some stunning duets. Tickets for the show are $15. VIP tickets, which give you early access, are $20 and also include a meet and greet with Leslie and Rick. For tickets, call (417) 239-4248. The job is simple: share with your friends all the good times you have in the Valley each winter – away from the snow and ice. In a place where you can play golf almost any winter day. In a place where your MH & RV resort is a community of its own with lots of friends to share in a whole array of fun activities. You’ll want to tell your friends about the dances in your park, the jam sessions, craft sales, pancake breakfasts, ice cream socials, and the wonderful Wintertainers™ performing daily in the resorts. If you like country music, there’s a jam for you and a number of quality bands performing country-western dances. If your preference is rockn-roll or bluegrass, you’re not disappointed there either. There are many talented performers who come to the Rio Grande Valley from Branson, Nashville, and other locales during the winter season. Be sure to tell your friends about the very affordable cost of living in the Rio Grande Valley! Not only do you save a ton of money on heating fuel to keep you warm in the winter, but everything costs less than in most other areas of the country. It’s a great place to make your retirement dollars stretch further, enabling you to enjoy a great lifestyle with all your new friends in Deep South Texas. The Winter Texan Times will be publishing our annual “Take Home Edition” of the paper on March 12 for you to take home with you so you can show your friends up north all the fun times we have here in the Rio Grande Valley. If you can help us spread the word, give us a call today and tell us how many papers you would like to take back north with you to share with others. Most people take extra copies of the Take Home Edition to share with their friends and even leave a few here and there at KOA’s along their route north. We hope you will do the same and invite your friends to come down with you next winter and give us a try. If you are able to take 50 papers or more, give us a call at (956) 580-7800 before close of business on March 7 and we will put you on our list of Winter Texan Ambassadors and make arrangements for you to get the papers you need on March 12. If you are leaving before March 12, take some extra copies of our earlier editions, including today’s paper, to share with the folks back home.

Rio Grande Valley State Veterans Cemetery is located at 2520 S. Inspiration Rd., in Mission. Veterans awarded for their valor with quilts On Monday, February 10, Lakewood RV Resort had a beautiful presentation of quilts. The Quilts of Valor were presented to ten Veterans and were made by quilters who may know a Veteran or simply wanted to honor a Veteran. During the presentation, a Veteran called each recipient to order and shared their personal military story. The quilt maker and a family member or friend opened each quilt, before folding it in half and together each Veteran was wrapped with the quilt they were presented. The Quilts of Valor (QOV) Foundation began in 2003 with a dream. The founder’s son was deployed in Iraq, and she had a dream she wanted to bring to life. It was about a young man, hunched over on the side of his bed, with feelings of despair. She could see his war demons dragging him down into an emotional gutter. She then saw him wrapped in a quilt and his whole demeanor changed from one of despair, to one of hope. The message was quilts equal healing. Now, volunteers from all over the US gather to donate their time and materials to make quilts and give to Veterans and service members. With over a quarter of a million sewers and quilters awarding military and Veterans, Quilts of Valor, as of December 31, 2024, has awarded over 401,361 quilts nationally. These quilts are not blankets or charity quilts. A Quilt of Valor is a quality, handmade quilt that is machine or hand quilted. It is awarded to a service member or Veteran who has been touched by war regardless of the conflict in which they served. QOVs are lifetime awards, stitched with love, prayers, and healing thoughts. The quilt says unequivocally, “Thank you” for your service and sacrifice in serving our nation. Ann Register, a Winter Texan at Lakewood, said she first saw her dad receive a QOV in 2015. “I witnessed firsthand the emotional experience receiving this honor had on our father,” she said. “My dads QOV became his most treasured possession and was always near him.” In 2018, upon retiring, Register joined the local QOV chapter in Princeton, IL. She enjoyed the group and their passion for the work they did. “I soon learned to award the quilts, besides sewing tops and quilting them.” She winters in the Valley with her husband, and in 2023, she came with two QOV quilts for two of their friends. After discussing the QOV program and awarding the quilts in a park meeting, the response was overwhelming, and there was enough interest to start up their own program at Lakewood. The following year, with the help from others in the park, they awarded eight Quilts of Valor. This year, they awarded 10, three of those awarded were from their neighbor park, Sunwest. For more information on how your group can become a part of the foundation, visit www.qovf. org. Next year’s event at Lakewood will be held on Monday, February 9, 2026. Courtesy photo
