We always enjoy your time with us, and our time with you, and we sure are going to miss it while you are gone. We know you are coming to the Valley for the community, the weather, lower prices, and more. We also know you are coming because of the culture and the warm welcomes you receive. But it is also your warmness that makes us love seeing you each year. Speaking of that warmness, you do so much for the communities you live in – whether it is for See THANK YOU pg. 18 Thank you for coming, safe travels, see you next season 2025 Winter Texan Fiesta. Photo by William Brunson By Herb Moering Hundreds of Winter Texans turned out Friday under picture perfect weather for the 49th annual Tourist Day in Nuevo Progreso. The event to say “thanks” to all those who come to shop, eat, purchase medicines and have dental work done in Progreso began with a brief welcome in the Bridge Authority Building from Samuel Robert Sparks Jr., the private bridge co-owner, to various area government officials and spouses and special friends. See PROGRESO pg. 20 Tourists enjoy refreshments and entertainment in Progreso Members of both delegations and honored guests took a moment out to exchange greetings and have some photos taken to commemorate the 49th Annual Tourist Day 2025. Photo by Herb Moering This season has, once again, been a blast. We have a lot of fun when we are out and about with you, sharing your news, and hearing your stories. I had the opportunity to hear many stories this year. What you see in the paper is sometimes just a bit of what is shared. I keep learning how eager you are to help others, to be there for your friends, and to teach others how to do the same. It’s amazing to see the strength you have and watch you use your experiences to help the community you live in through service, teaching, and more. We always enjoy sharing the stories of community service you do for your park, and for organizations, schools, and churches in your community. We get to see how thankful and how full of gratitude everyone is for your service – whether it be through volunteer work, making something, donating food, or any of the other multitude of ways you find to fulfill the need. We, and so many

Rita hails from Wisconsin and moved to Texas over 28 years ago. She was originally in the Weslaco Trailer Park before moving to the Trails End Park. Rita shuffled for 28 years and is well known throughout the Valley due to participating in many, many tournaments – and her great personality. In 2023 she was inducted into the RGVSA Hall of Fame which honors individuals who have demonstrated superior performance in the RGVSA shuffleboard activities over a period of time. To be nominated, a player must have achieved four years as an active expert player and earned 200 lifetime points which is quite an achievement as Rita began shuffling at the age of 70! The 2023 Hall of Fame dinner was one of the biggest they have ever had and was attended by at least 28 family members from Wisconsin and the surrounding area. Nominees must also have provided outstanding service to their park and/or the Valley which Rita accomplished in part by many, many, hours of working in the kitchen, helping with meals and making homemade pies for the tournaments. She is not only superbly skilled in the game but also brings her sense of humor to the courts. Her favorite words were always “I didn’t mean to do that” after she put the opponent’s disc in the kitchen - which were done with accuracy and frequency! You can always find Rita close to the shuffle courts, for a fun game and a little talk. Darlene King, of Trails End, said she is very much loved by everyone at the park, and it shows with these two poems. Rita Norlander She’s a very special lady That we’re all blessed to know Who came to this great Valley Nearly 30 years ago. She shuffles all the time Except when it’s too cold Cuz we make her stay inside And NOT because she’s old. See RITA pg. 18 Rita Norlander throws out the first puck at the shuffle tournament which is named after her. Rita Norlander holding her certificate from the RGVSA Hall of Fame.

HARLINGEN, TEXAS WWW.HCTVALLEYSTARS.ORG TICKETS AVAILABLE ONLINE WWW.HCTVALLEYSTARS.ORG MWE presents last show of season – “ShowTime!” The McAllen Wind Ensemble is thrilled to conclude its 20242025 concert season with “ShowTime!” – a spectacular evening of Broadway’s greatest hits – on Saturday, April 5, at 7:30 p.m. at the McAllen Performing Arts Center. This exciting performance is made possible by the McAllen Performing and Cultural Arts Foundation, which supports performing arts and education in the Rio Grande Valley. Audiences will be transported to the bright lights of Broadway with an unforgettable selection of beloved show tunes. The concert will also feature favorites ranging from the classics of Rogers and Hammerstein to the recent hit musical turned movie, Wicked. As a special tribute, the McAllen Wind Ensemble will perform “Los Bailes Calientes” by William Owens in honor of Jim Melhart, recognizing his dedication to music education in the region. Trip Shirah, a distinguished McAllen High School senior active in choir and theatre, will perform with the ensemble for the second time this season before continuing his musical studies in college. He performed his other solo during their November concert. His mother, Alissa Shirah, is one of the ensemble’s bassoon players. He has been honored for his vocal talent in both choir and musical theater. Currently, he is finalizing auditions for competitive programs to study musical theater in college. Additionally, the winner of the McAllen Wind Ensemble’s Solo Competition, Alan Sanchez of Vanguard Academy Beethoven, will perform his winning marimba solo. The competition is held each year to provide a platform for incredibly talented high school students to go through a competition audition process. Local music supporters donate the funds for scholarships that are provided to the top three winners. The ensemble believes it is important to offer an opportunity for the winner to perform on the main stage and share their incredible talent with the broader community. The final guest performance will be from the Edcouch-Elsa High School Flute Studio, who will grace the stage after having serenaded audiences in the lobby before each concert this season. The MWE wanted to provide them with an opportunity on the main stage to share their passion for music and in recognition of their contributions to their concert season. Their director is Alma Arellano, who is also one of the flute players. She demonstrates her commitment to the musical development of her students by providing them with many different public performance opportunities throughout the community – the McAllen Wind Ensemble being just one of them. Since its founding in 1973, the McAllen Wind Ensemble has been a cornerstone of the region’s cultural landscape. Under the skilled leadership of Music Director Roger Olivarez, the ensemble continues to captivate audiences with themed concerts that celebrate a wide range of musical styles. I am on the road again. Well maybe better said - I am in the air again. For today I will combine flying to Houston and driving to Central Texas. I certainly will arrive in Central Texas sooner since I am flying part of the way. But I will miss seeing the countryside change from the lush semi tropical South Texas to the rolling hills of Central Texas. Some of you reading this will soon be traveling out of the Rio Grande Valley as you leave for your summer home. We are going to miss you. Most of my travel through Texas takes me on Highway 77 and past Kingsville. As I travel toward Kingsville, I always watch for wildlife such as the native Rio Grande Turkey and the javelinas as well as the white tail deer. I really enjoy watching the countryside change...especially the vegetation. As I travel along, I remember past travels and how beautiful the wildflowers of Texas brighten up the drive. Hopefully the cold weather we had this past winter will not have taken its toll on the beautiful bluebonnets, the wine cups and the dandelions and thistles that carpet the green pastures. Already the early blooming yellow dandelions are springing up in my yard. For those of you who may be traveling toward central Texas let me give you a warning. The countryside will not look anything at all as it has on my past trips. I was just sure that the once beautiful oak trees had been hit with a blight. Mile after mile the pastures were covered with what appeared to be totally dead trees. I could not even spot any new growth. Needless to say, I was anxious to ask a native from that area about this problem. Finally, that night I asked the waitress at the restaurant about those dead trees. To my surprise she answered, “They aren’t dead at all. Those are pecan trees, and the cold got them, but they are beginning to come back.” I still feel very doubtful. If those are all pecan trees, then central Texas must produce enough pecans to feed the entire nation those wonderful pecan pies. To counter the sight of so many trees that appear dead, the green grass of the meadows was a great uplifting sight. Central Texas has received a lot more rain than we have received in South Texas. The cattle looked quite fat and healthy. There was plenty of lush green grass covering the hillsides. In another week, the hillsides should be covered with many more wildflowers. Little patches of bluebonnets were just beginning to spring up. The Indian Paint Brushes added an occasional spot of red while the yellow dandelions covered the hillsides with their welcoming color. They are always the first to bloom. I know the road across Texas is long, but this is such a beautiful time to travel. Be careful, have a wonderful summer and come back again. We shall miss you.

As she takes center stage at the Texas Southmost College Mariachi Festival’s Grand Concert, she carries with her the hopes of inspiring young musicians, especially young women, to pursue their passion for mariachi. Mariachi Reyna De Los Angeles will make history in Brownsville with their debut performance in the Rio Grande Valley on Saturday, April 26, at 7:30 p.m. during Texas Southmost College Mariachi Festival at TSC’s Jacob Brown Auditorium. Founded in 1994 by mariachi maestro José Hernández, Mariachi Reyna De Los Angeles has become a symbol of perseverance, discipline, and musical excellence in a traditionally male-dominated genre. Hernandez vividly recalls her early experiences attending mariachi festivals, where she found a sense of belonging among fellow musicians. “Going to mariachi festivals provides the opportunity for meeting other like-minded people who share the same passion,” said Hernandez. “It is a place to connect, to create music together, and to be inspired by professional musicians.” Through their groundbreaking performances, Mariachi Reyna De Los Angeles has garnered international recognition, sharing the stage with legends like Vicki Carr, Lucha Villa, and Miguel Aceves Mejía while also performing for global icons like Tom Petty, Oprah Winfrey, and John Travolta. Their albums, Solo Tuya and El Mejor Mariachi Femenino del Mundo, continue to set a high standard in mariachi excellence. Texas Southmost College is honored to host this historic performance as part of its mission to celebrate Mariachi heritage and elevate the arts within the community. Avigai Gonzalez, Texas Southmost College Project Administrator and TSC Music Instructor, emphasized the significance of Mariachi Reyna De Los Angeles’ presence at the festival. “Their journey and musical brilliance serve as an inspiration to our students and community. Seeing them perform live will be a life-changing experience for many aspiring musicians.” Hernandez hopes that the festival will not only entertain but also spark a newfound dedication among students. “Seeing a professional mariachi perform live is completely different from just listening to an album or watching a video. You get to see the musicians interpret the music, engage with the audience, and communicate with each other on stage. It’s about See MARIACHI pg. 19 Mariachi Reyna De Los Angeles will make history with their debut performance in Brownsville during the Texas Southmost College Mariachi Festival at TSC’s Jacob Brown Auditorium. Rio Valley Estates Winter Texans enjoy the weather at Onion Fest By Herb Moering The weather is important to Jill Zehe, from Winter Green Estates in Mission. She was part of a group of motorcycle riders at the Texas Onion Fest in Weslaco on Saturday. The festival featured great weather for the crowds who attended to celebrate the 1015 onion. Jill said it is the Valley weather that allows the group to ride yearround, which includes her husband, Richard. The couple from northern Wisconsin have been Winter Texans for seven years. With them were Bob and Connie Metzger, from Hidden Valley RV Park in Mission for the past nine years, who also reside summers in Northern Wisconsin, and Linda Lavigno, from Eldorado Acres RV Park in Mission, who has come down from Calgary in Alberta, Canada for the past two years. J u a n i t a Small, from Lemon Tree Estates, came to the Onion Fest for the first time. “The food smells wonderful,” she said, which was a reference to the many food vendors along the blocked off Texas Boulevard on the south side of the downtown area. She has been in the Valley since 2012 and noted the good weather, along with the entertainment, the food, the people and all the activities in her park. Juanita also got her bag of onions, which were being given away to all the fest visitors, some 20,000 small bags. Volunteering at the onion giveaway site was Mr. Weslaco, 18-year-old Jaden Guiterrez, a junior at Weslaco High School. He said he was chosen at a pageant back on February 15 and will serve as an ambassador for the city at various events for a year, along with members of a royal court that was also chosen. He said most of judging was based on answering five questions. Thousands of bags of 1015 onions were given away to visitors at the Texas Onion Fest Saturday. Under the guidance of faculty, students can perform complimentary services such as updos, pedicures, haircuts, facials and much more for visitors. Services are available to the public Monday through Thursday at the college’s Cosmetology Center located on the second floor of the Shah Eye Center at 1506 E. Griffin Pkwy. in Mission. With every new face that comes in, students say the complementary services they are providing to clients enables them to get closer to the people they one day hope to serve on a regular basis when they graduate. “I love having the ability to make people feel better about themselves and in turn, I feel the clients make me feel more secure See DANCE pg. 19 See STC pg. 20 Courtesy photo
