Yes, you are right, the Welcome Back edition was last week and somehow, I missed the deadline. So, this is another welcome which you well deserve. Winter Texans are like the frosting on a cake to the Rio Grande Valley. You add so much to our culture which as you well know is highly influenced by our proximity to Mexico. And many of you share your time and talents with us by volunteering to help in your adopted community or you volunteer at hospitals and in our schools. In fact, you are an inspiration to us and especially to me. After reading about all that you do to help our communities, I was inspired to follow your example of giving back. Since I am a retired elementary school teacher who has a basic knowledge of Spanish it was a natural choice for me to volunteer as a reading tutor in one of our public schools. I feel that I am of real help to those children. Not only do they receive extra attention, which they greatly need, but their reading skills have improved. This is a one-onone experience and takes just one hour of my time each week. The experience has been so rewarding that I am hoping that I will be accepted to volunteer at another school or at the hospital. The fact that I can speak and read basic Spanish has helped me greatly. I imagine that those of you who have been coming to the Valley for several years have picked up some Spanish. First, you surely must have learned how to say yes or no in Spanish. And after that, probably the word for more which is mas. I know of at least one park where Spanish classes are offered for those who wish to learn another language. I am sure that there are other parks who offer these classes, and why not? The world is truly a small place after all. Even our public schools have realized that we need to learn more than one language. Not too many years ago, children were punished if they spoke Spanish on the playground. Now things have changed. Classes are offered where the student is allowed to choose a second language and can choose a pen pal who will correspond with them in their native language. Just a little knowledge of another language will open up a whole new world in your travels. As we think of travels it is time to look at what is planned for the future. King Ranch Hand Breakfast is always the Saturday before Thanksgiving, For the rest of this year, plans are for the San Antonio Boat Parade and Hill Country Christmas as well as a Mexico Christmas tour, and the ever-popular trip to Monterrey. I am still waiting on some of the contracts before I can give a final quote. Stay tuned for more details on those trips and to see what else is coming. e . a - g a e - n g - a - t n r s e y - - s g - LIGHTS From pg. 6 alerts birds to its presence With your help, we can dramatically reduce the hazards posed by light pollution and bird collisions in cities nationwide and allow birds to resume their typical migratory behaviors.
