The Brownsville Historical Association has a wonderful fold out map of the City of Brownsville. They put out their need to help their communities for Thanksgiving and Christmas. The food pantries try to give the families they support a traditional meal for Thanksgiving and Christmas. The Martin Valley Ranch parks in Penitas are known to support the Penitas Food Pantry throughout the year, and especially during the holidays. In previous years, the community parks have not only helped keep the pantry stocked, but they also helped build their new building and help with stocking for the children for Christmas. This year has been a little different because the need is so big. One of the gentlemen that helps at the pantry put a call out less than two weeks ago for help. Here is a little bit of Jeff Reardon’s original post on the Enchanted Valley Ranch Facebook Page: “As many of you know, I help out at the Penitas Food Pantry. Everyone is probably getting their supplies, trimmings, and more getting ready for their festive meal. Many are looking forward to getting together with friends and family. And yet, there are those around us that might not have that privilege. We often think about those who need a helping hand even more during the holidays – when it is a need year-round. But while we are thinking of them during the holidays, it’s nice to give a little more of our time, and maybe a gift, or a meal. I invite you to find someone to help this season of giving. It doesn’t have to be monetary. It can be just checking in, giving some flowers, a card, or just a note to say I am thinking of you. They have been preparing the park for the last few weeks for the 16th season of its Holiday Village in Brownsville. The Holiday Village officially opens on November 24. Each year one or two new ones might be added, so you never know what you might see. Currently there are over 30 fully decorated cottages lining the sidewalks at the park. For those that are new to the village, Holiday Village is a collection of miniature cottages, each one measuring about 10’ wide x 8’ deep and over 11’ tall. Each one is adorned inside and out with the most whimsical and adorable holiday trimmings. Best viewing is just after the sun sets so you can see the full displays all lit up – although the lights come on at 6 p.m. every evening. The Village is set up in the park every November, free and open to the public. It opens every year just before Thanksgiving and remains open through January 1. You can get a sneak peek at the villages online at www.holidayvillagebrownsville. com/cottages. Luckily, they bought meat earlier in the year when it was aplenty and stored it away in their new walk-in freezer and have continued being able to give meat every week. But they were unsuccessful in buying turkeys for Thanksgiving and it doesn’t look good for buying hams for Christmas.” Jeff proceeded to buy turkeys himself for the pantry and asked for help in getting more. He delivered 24 birds that first week with the hopes of getting at least 100 more each week. Jeff mentioned a sale on turkey at Wal-Mart and HEB and that he would accept cash or check, Cashapp, or Venmo. He wasn’t sure what he would get from his post, but he was pleasantly surprised with what he was able to do with what he got. With the help of Kathy Dreis Severance spreading the word, he was able to pick up 96 turkeys last week with the cash that was donated. An additional 39 turkeys were dropped off at his house, the park hall, and the pantry. “I am so proud and grateful to all my ‘Turkey Angels’ this week,” said Jeff. He was personally able to hand out turkeys last week to some of the poorest families in not only Texas, but the whole United States because of the generosity from the community. “Of course,” he continued, “we have one more week before Thanksgiving, so we need about another 135 turkeys for this week.” Jeff is on a mission to finish out Thanksgiving for these families. “I have faith we will come up with enough turkeys…. But I really am going to need all the help I can get if we are going to provide a Real Christmas meal for all 440+ families that rely on Penitas Food Pantry each month.” “From the bottom of my heart, I thank you all.” If you want to help Jeff out, you can call or text him at (715) 7816080. Their Downtown and Market Square Walking Tour includes the Stillman House, Profirio Diaz House, Webb Drugstore, San Roman Building, Majestic Theatre, the Old City Library, and more in their downtown historical area. The Stillman House is all set up pretty close to how it would have been in the 1850’s. It has a beautiful hearth kitchen, outdoor garden area, wood floors, white columns out front, and there is an area that displays the history of the Stillman’s and city. The Porfirio Diaz House has been transformed into a museum. There is a lot to see in this building – from the history of farming, trains, cars and battles that have been fought in the area. Not only do people love coming to the Valley because of its weather, but a huge part is because of its people. In this case, it was because of the love of our Wintertainers™. Our Wintertainers™ have a true love, not only for what they do, but also for the people they serve and the people that love them. A gentleman shared his recent experience with some of those Wintertainers™. He shared how his mother had been sick and how these entertainers ask about her and know when she is absent. He also shared the service they were giving him and his mother – by an impromptu haircut, and best of all, a personal concert. This, my friends, is why our Winter Texans love the Valley so much. We get to know each other. We become friends. We recognize when others are missing, when they are hurting, when they need something. We love and care for each other. I hope that while you are here, you get a chance to find a special friend, find an entertainer you love, find some great friends that you will look forward to seeing year after year. I know we have our own connections with some of you and some of our Wintertainers™. It’s a highlight to our year when we see certain people return, and sad when we find out someone can’t return. So go out and have fun. Make some friends. Learn why we love the Valley and why the Winter Texans call it their second home. NOVEMBER 19, 2025 www.wintertexantimes.com 6 WINTER TEXAN TIMES Parks celebrate their Veterans This past week many parks celebrated the Veterans in their parks. Tropic Winds and Sunshine RV were just two of the many parks that held events to honor Veterans for their service and sacrifice. The Veterans Day Celebration at Tropic Winds was held to honor and recognize the service and sacrifice of the veterans in the community. To start the ceremony, the Harlingen High School Color Guard presented the colors. Then each branch was called forward, and their respective armed forces medley was played as everyone sang along. As a token of appreciation, a coin was presented to each Veteran in attendance, as well as a complimentary meal following the ceremony. There were around 75 people in attendance, with around 26 Veterans honored. During the event, the spouses of the military members were also acknowledged. Joiel Quick, emcee and a resident at Sunshine RV said their event was beautiful and many US and Canadians, their family and friends, were present to be honored. They were grateful to have the cadets from the Marine Military Academy on hand to post the colors. Among the cadets was the guest speaker, Grady O’Rourke, a third-year cadet. Special recognition went to John Ramsier. Ramsier turned 100 years young this year and served in WWII, Normandy with the US Army, 1943-1945, 12/53rd Combat Engineers. Special Veteran Recognition was also given to Luther Dappen. Dappen served as a CPL in the US Army, 19491953, 25th Infantry Div. Tom Auger was on hand to give some brief Texas military history and also spoke of Sunshine RV’s Veterans Wall of Honor. Music was provided by Ray Barreras, with some Glenn Miller songs, and the military medleys for the US and Canada. The US National Anthem was sung beautifully by Wanda Morrison Barreras and everyone joined in. Guy Boudreault sang the Canadian Anthem, O’ Canada, in both French and English. Pastor Larry Q Allen gave the opening and closing prayers. Event Chair Vickie Heggan was honored for pulling the whole event together to ensure all our US and Canadian Veterans felt appreciated. Thanks also goes out to the volunteers working behind the scenes including Vickie and Sunshine RV management. Approximately 100 people were in attendance. This December, 744 local WAA Sponsorship Groups have registered. They are working to raise the funds needed to place wreaths on the graves of the more than 574,600 service members resting in these participating cemeteries. Through these efforts, volunteers help advance WAA’s year-round mission to remember the fallen, honor those who serve, and teach the next generation the value of freedom. The cemetery’s Wreath Laying ceremony is on Saturday, December 13 at 9 a.m. As of Monday, November 17, the cemetery had 1,446 wreaths sponsored, only 32% of its goal (4,400). With Purchase of a New Model Home The Salvation Army seeks volunteers While many are just beginning to think about holiday decorations, The Salvation Army has been preparing for Christmas for months—ensuring that families in need across McAllen can experience the joy and hope of the season. As red kettles begin to appear outside stores and Angel Trees are set up in local businesses, volunteers are urgently needed to help bring the spirit of Christmas to life. The Salvation Army of McAllen is calling on the community to Give with Joy by volunteering for its Red Kettle campaign and Angel Tree program – two beloved traditions that make a real difference for thousands of individuals and families. “Volunteering makes such a big impact on so many lives during the holidays,” said Major Frankie Zuniga with The Salvation Army in McAllen. “Whether you can spare an hour, a morning, or a full day, share the gift of your time and Give with Joy to those who need it most. You can ring the bell at a kettle on your own, with your family, or bring a whole group—it’s a wonderful way to serve together.” Every dollar collected in the Red Kettle supports The Salvation Army’s social services programs throughout the year right here in McAllen. Visit www.RegisterToRing.com and follow the prompts to sign up for the location and shift of your choice or contact Major Frankie Zuniga at (956) 682-1468 or Frankie.Zuniga@uss.salvationarmy.org. Volunteers are needed through December 23. The Salvation Army will provide gifts for 2,800 children through the Angel Tree program this year, thanks to the generosity of local donors and businesses. Volunteer activities include working at Angel Tree adoption locations, sorting gifts, and participating in the gift distribution day for registered families. Churches and businesses can also host an Angel Tree to bring joy and holiday cheer to children in the community. Angel Trees are asked to be available from now through December 18. Contact Major Jan Zuniga at (956) 682-1468 or Jan.Zuniga@uss. salvationarmy.org Whether you’re ringing a bell, helping with Angel Tree gifts, or serving holiday meals, your time and compassion help The Salvation Army Give with Joy to those who need it most this holiday season. Visit www.salvationarmymcallen.org, call (956) 682-1468 or visit at 1600 N. 23rd St., to donate or learn more about how you can support The Salvation Army this Christmas. Courtesy photo
