Not only do you get to visit one of the nine World Birding sites, but there’s the intriguing story and history surrounding the Pumphouse’s importance to agriculture. Also, during this time of year, you’ll get to see it dressed up for the holidays. The last time I visited was around Halloween and they had the entire front of the area decorated with spiders, monsters and clowns. The center features a 4.5-mile round trip biking and walking trail. There have been so many holiday celebrations throughout the Valley that I am sure you have had a chance to go to at least one of them. I am also sure that your park has had something too or has something planned soon. I have seen photos on Facebook of parks helping those in their community with food, clothing, and more this season. We even have some in this issue of the paper that has been shared with us. We would love to see photos of your gatherings at your park, your Red Hat adventures, and anything else you want to share with us. We love seeing you having fun. Our community loves having you here. This year’s Christmas concert takes audiences on a musical journey across the United States, featuring beloved seasonal favorites, rich orchestral arrangements, and heartwarming holiday classics from coast to coast. The evening will also showcase a special guest performance by the Deborah Case Dance Academy, whose elegant and expressive choreography will bring an added layer of beauty and storytelling to this festive event. “Holiday concerts have a unique way of uniting our community,” said Roger Olivarez, Music Director of the McAllen Wind Ensemble. “With Christmas Across America, and with the artistry of the Deborah Case Dance Academy joining us, we’re creating an immersive and joyful experience for families to cherish together.” “The dancers and I love the happy, lively sounds of the wind ensemble,” said Deborah Case. “Their holiday sounds give a lift to a dancer’s steps!” Olivarez, who has been directing the ensemble since 2014, has said before that there is a certain amount of magic in Christmas music and the Christmas concert has always been his favorite to prepare for. He loves bringing the music to the audience and it’s seeing and feeling the energy that makes every concert special. But with Christmas, we’re bringing back the memories of family, simpler and happier times, he said last year – and it’s the same every year with the Christmas concert. Admission to Christmas Across America is free, and guests are encouraged to reserve tickets in advance at www.mcallenwindensemble.org for a smooth entry. Patrons who prefer printed tickets may pick them up at the Box Office. Supporters are invited to enhance their concert experience by joining the Patron Program, which offers exclusive perks such as reserved seating, expedited entry, and more. A $50 donation ($100 per couple) directly supports new music, local arts outreach, and future performances across the Rio Grande Valley. See MWE pg. 3 McAllen Wind Ensemble

You find causes that you relate to. You really become a part of the Valley, a part of us. Your giving is just a bonus to the communities you help. You are truly a treasure to have for the few short months we do. There are so many ways to give this time of year. Most of the big organizations like Salvation Army and Toys for Tots are already done collecting toys for children in our area by now. Most will be distributed this week, just before Christmas. The Salvation Army and RGV Food Bank are just two of the organizations you can give to all year long. Many of the cities in the Valley have their own food banks as well. Then we have church and school organizations, animal shelters, police and fire department organizations, and so many more. You have a lot of options if you choose to give a little, or a lot, this season. Like I have said in previous weeks, if you can’t give anything monetary, give a little bit of yourself – a hug, a smile, a touching note, just a little something that tells someone they are appreciated, that they are seen. Sometimes that is more important than anything else. ~ Rina RAMBLINGS From pg. 1 will be the “Turning of the Quilts” program, accompanied by an awards reception where outstanding entries will be recognized. The Magic Valley’s early 20th Century transition into an agriculture powerhouse is retold at the Old Hidalgo Pumphouse, which now embraces nature conservation as part of its purpose. The pumphouse still features some of its old mechanics, giving a peek into its history. Visitors to the museum can learn about the steam-driven irrigation pump that transformed Hidalgo County into a year-round farming phenomenon. Through the museum, you will learn that the hurricane of 1933 shifted the Rio Grande River a halfmile away from the pumphouse, requiring the digging of a canal to the river. Initially there were just two pumps installed in 1909 in the old pumphouse with others added over the years to send water to farm fields and cities via irrigation canals. All of the pumps are there for viewing. Total pumping capacity reached 408,000 gallons a minute, fast enough to fil an Olympic-size pool in 20 seconds. The pumphouse, operating first by steam before coal and electricity followed, performed its duties until 1983 when an all-electric pumphouse was installed downstream. Interpretive text and images explain the pumphouse system in terms easy to understand. The museum is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Bike rentals are available for $6 per day and are available at the PUMPHOUSE From pg. 1 Pumphouse front desk. There are guided museum tours available for $3. Guided trolley tours are available for $5 every third Tuesday of the month. Other dates are available upon reservation in advance. There is a map for self-guided tours showing all the spots of interest inside the museum like the original pumproom, intake channel, water tubes in boiler, the steam collector pipe, and more. While you are in the area, the block preceding the Pumphouse is full of history. Located just a short distance away is the old courthouse, jail and other historic buildings. Also close by are several dining and shopping options in old houses. You can also locate other historic areas of Hidalgo on their sidewalk map located by a little swing and small pavilion. DECEMBER 17, 2025 www.wintertexantimes.com 6 WINTER TEXAN TIMES Veterans Peer Center receives support from WT park On Thursday, November 20, volunteers from Winter Ranch RV Resort prepared food to provide the Veterans on Friday, November 21. The food was delivered to the Weslaco Veterans Peer Center and then served to the Veterans and their families. Approximately 50 Veterans, spouses, and children were served a ham dinner with all of the fixings. They were all very appreciative. The remaining leftovers were placed in the refrigerator for additional meals to be eaten later by visitors to the peer center. The meals were made possible by the generous donations of the Winter Ranch residents which were a little over $600. After Bob Coakley paid for the food, $352 remained. The remaining funds were used to purchase gift cards for the Veterans and given to Anthony Beltran, Peer Center Coordinator. This was in addition to just over $250 of gift cards that were presented at the dinner. Coakley wants to give a huge thanks to all of those that donated toward the Weslaco Veterans holiday meal. This is the first time the park has donated to the peer center. Coakley said Beltran is a resident at the park. After finding out about the need due to a shortfall in funding, the park decided to step in and help. “We feel he is part of our family and wanted to help,” said Coakley. Beltran said donations like this are always appreciated. The homeless Veterans and common Veteran clients are always grateful. “They express gratitude easily,” said Beltran. Donations help alleviate the burden of the food pantry when the food bank runs dry and provide hygiene items for homeless Veterans to take with them on their travels. “There is a sound applause of ovations for these kinds of community gestures,” said Beltran about what the Winter Ranch residents did for the center. “So many smiling faces and shared camaraderie are visible when these meals and luncheons are provided. There is a positive mental health aspect in social facilitation that is supported by having such meals take place and this mental health boost is very much needed for Veterans that can be reintegrated and given the opportunity to create conversations that give them insight and encouragement to apply for programs that they may, otherwise, avoid without guidance or information.” The donations, both by sustenance and that which is monetary, he added, are both highly effective in providing additional center inventory stock and group motivation to break bread together as it should be. While state grants and facility budgets may be tight, donations help See VETERANS pg. 14 Winter Ranch residents prepared a feast for Veterans. (Photo courtesy of Winter Ranch)

The Pharr Police Department gathered, vetted and then shared the names of families in need. They assisted in obtaining a discount from the Burlington Store on S. Jackson St. in Pharr to help their money go even further. On Wednesday, December 10, 24 shoppers descended on Burlington and quickly gathered items. They then handed them off to 32 residents who wrapped them and then boxed the items for each family. The Pharr Police came and picked up the boxes and beginning, on December 12th, will be delivering the gifts to the families for the next 12 days. We know you are coming to the Valley for the community, the weather, lower prices, and more. We also know you are coming because of the culture and the warm welcomes you receive. But it is also your warmness that makes us love seeing you each year. Speaking of that warmness, you do so much for the communities you live in – whether it is for See THANK YOU pg. 18 Thank you for coming, safe travels, see you next season 2025 Winter Texan Fiesta. Photo by William Brunson By Herb Moering Hundreds of Winter Texans turned out Friday under picture perfect weather for the 49th annual Tourist Day in Nuevo Progreso. The event to say “thanks” to all those who come to shop, eat, purchase medicines and have dental work done in Progreso began with a brief welcome in the Bridge Authority Building from Samuel Robert Sparks Jr., the private bridge co-owner, to various area government officials and spouses and special friends. See PROGRESO pg. 20 Tourists enjoy refreshments and entertainment in Progreso Members of both delegations and honored guests took a moment out to exchange greetings and have some photos taken to commemorate the 49th Annual Tourist Day 2025. Photo by Herb Moering This season has, once again, been a blast. We have a lot of fun when we are out and about with you, sharing your news, and hearing your stories. I had the opportunity to hear many stories this year. What you see in the paper is sometimes just a bit of what is shared. I keep learning how eager you are to help others, to be there for your friends, and to teach others how to do the same. It’s amazing to see the strength you have and watch you use your experiences to help the community you live in through service, teaching, and more. We always enjoy sharing the stories of community service you do for your park, and for organizations, schools, and churches in your community. We get to see how thankful and how full of gratitude everyone is for your service – whether it be through volunteer work, making something, donating food, or any of the other multitude of ways you find to fulfill the need. I will spend Christmas in Central Texas with my children. Right now, I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of my oldest daughter who will arrive from San Miguel Allende, Mexico on December 17th. She is more in touch with my other two children - especially age-wise - and will help me with the decisions as to what would be the best choice for their special Christmas presents. Very definitely we have to have live Christmas greenery in the house for that special Christmas smell. I suppose I better buy some Christmas candles to add to that smell as well. It has actually been quite a few years since we celebrated Christmas in my home. Do you remember when your children were small and they were just positive that Santa Claus would not be able to find them if they were not in their own home? Now everybody is all grown up, living in other cities with their own small children. So here I am “On the road again.” If you are expecting company to visit you, why not introduce them to some of our fantastic museums that tell the history of the Rio Grande Valley. From the Gulf of Mexico up to Rio Grande City and all the way to Kingsville, you will find plenty to keep you busy. Museums and historical locations with markers help us all to appreciate the history of our area. Take time to read the markers. Many of the museums tell the story in both English and Spanish. Your younger visitors will be fascinated with the stories of pirates who tied lanterns to their donkey’s legs and led them up and down the beach at South Padre Island, luring the ships ashore to plunder them of all their treasures. At the other end of the Valley, in Edinburg, you will find a very interesting Museum of South Texas History. My twelve-year-old great nephew was especially intrigued with this museum. And of course, en route to the upper Valley, you could stop off in Weslaco to visit their two museums. If you want something more up to date, there is Space X on the road to Boca Chica. This would probably be a drive by only. Whatever you do and wherever you are enjoy your family, friends and visitors as you build memories of the good times you have as you explore the Rio Grande Valley. For even more sites to see in the Rio Grande Valley, find the Rio Grande Valley Visitors Guide on the Winter Texan Times website. In there you will find plenty of places to visit in whatever area you decide to explore. d r , Museum of South Texas History
