Debuting for his first time on SPI is the 2025 American Kitefliers Assn. Indoor Single Line National Champion, Rich Cairncross (Media, PA). He will be joined by Brett Marchel (New Boston, MI). Brett was not only captain for Team USA at the 2024 World Kite Cup in Berck Sur Mer, France, he was also an alternate pilot for the special-effects kites at “Epcot Forever,” Disney’s nighttime fireworks show in 20192020. The young and energetic 2022 Wildwoods International Indoor Champion, Adam Shutsky (Baltimore, MD) will be returning as well as many other talented indoor fliers; Paul de Bakker (Oak Harbor, WA), Amy and Connor Doran (Seattle, WA), Marc Conklin (Midlothian, VA), Jim Cosca (Fort Washington, MD), Paul Lamasters (Germantown, MD) and Torrey Lindemann (Dunedin, FL). These amazing fliers will show off their kite-flying talent as they hit the floor with their choreographed routines to a mix of your favorite songs. If you have never been to an Indoor Kite Performance, you don’t know what you are missing! These kiters are the best of the best and the reason that the SPI Indoor Kite Fest is the largest indoor kiting event in the United States. Tickets for the Indoor Kite Exhibition are $15 per person or $25 for both nights. Seating is limited, so tickets must be purchased or reserved in advance at B&S Kites. Tickets are not available at the door and must be picked up on or before January 25th. So, head on down to South Padre Island the first week of February. You’ll be happy you did. You’ll not only get to experience two amazing shows with your friends, but you just may also realize you are never too young or too old to ‘tie one on’! We would love to see photos and hear some recaps from you about what you are doing at them. We love highlighting your wins, and everything else you enjoy doing during your time in the Valley. It’s a weeklong celebration of the sport and the island. The event includes free open play at the SPI Convention Center, clinics and lessons for beginners, daily social mixers, vendor booths, and giveaways. Whether you’re a competitive player or just looking to try something new, there’s something for everyone – especially Winter Texans. Pickleball on Padre will be held at the South Padre Island Convention Center and Isla Grand Resort from January 26 through February 2. Hosted by the RGV Pickleball Association, full details can be found on their website at rgvpickleball.org. The Pickleball on Padre event is hosted by the RGV Pickleball Association, something JR has been pivotal in forming along with others in the Valley that realized there was a need to bring structure, support, and access to the sport of pickleball across the RGV. He said what started as small local meetups quickly revealed a much larger demand – not just from seasoned players, but from schools, families, and community centers looking for a positive, healthy outlet. “We realized that if we wanted to grow this sport responsibly and inclusively, we needed an organized effort to make sure all communities – especially youth and seniors – had the opportunity to play, learn, and benefit,” said JR about forming the organization. He is more than just one of the founding members, he is an ambassador, a level 2 certified instructor, and a national pickleball champion. When Pickleball on Padre began, there were maybe 15 people in a single tournament, said JR. “Last year, we had more than 250 participants – and thousands more showed up just to watch” Through events like Pickleball on Padre, the organization has hosted clinics, provided free gear, and even helped Isla Grand Resort convert two of its tennis courts into permanent pickleball courts to accommodate the demand. The Pickleball on Padre event is their most exciting event. For the first time, they will be hosting a dual-sanctioned tournament. He will be at Louie’s Backyard on Saturday, January 17, Friday, January 23, and Saturday, January 24. Doors open at 6 p.m. with the shows starting at 7 p.m. Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the door. Food and drinks are available for purchase. For tickets, call (417) 294-5248. Hadler loves returning to the Valley and meeting people from so many different places. He enjoys his time on the island and looks forward to having fun and a great time. Being the youngest of nine, Hadler often jokes that his first audience was the cows he used to sing to on the farm. Since those days of farming, he’s always loved to sing and dreamed of someday taking his talent to Nashville and beyond. It was never so much to be a star, but to be able to help those in need because he could, something that was instilled in him by his parents. At the age of 20 he moved to Nashville and two years later fulfilled his dream of singing at the world-famous Grand Ole Opry. This opportunity opened the door to many things including landing a recording contract, two songs in the top 100 songs on the Music Row chart, as well as an invite to move to Branson, Missouri by Jerry Presley, Elvis Presley’s cousin. He has been performing in Branson for 24 years, performing over 100 shows a year. He has performed his Strait to Branson show for the last two years and was voted Branson’s male vocalist of the year in 2025. A patriot at heart, Hadler felt a connection with George Strait since he is a veteran, he loves his music and remembers working on the farm to the music. Hadler said he has done a lot of research into the man George Strait and shares his stories on stage, just like George Strait does at his own concerts. He talks about his wife, his time in the service, and more, from a first-person point of view as if he was the man himself. Hadler has a project that is very near and dear to his heart – Gumi Camp USA. He never sings a show without mentioning the camp and inviting people to visit. The camp is a healing place for American vets. The 258-acre property sits in southeast Taney County, Missouri. Veterans that need healing and support may reside at the camp without cost to them and grow at their own pace. Programs offered include peerto-peer support groups, veteran outdoor expeditions, experiencing life on a working farm/ranch, animal therapy, and storytelling.
