Some chilliness in the mornings and some nice afternoons. Great to be outside enjoying the nature that surrounds us. The Rio Grande Valley has so many great places to see when the weather is this nice. There are state parks, wildlife refuges, forts, and more. You have places like the War Memorial in McAllen, the stations of the cross at the San Juan Basilica, cemetery tours in Brownsville, visiting the colorful murals in Harlingen, and birding and nature events, among other events like the Texas Citrus Fiesta this past weekend. There is a lot of history, culture, and color all around us. We have the opportunity to go and see or really delve into it if you visit one of the many museums in the Valley. Author Jennifer L. Bristol chose Quinta Mazatlán as the launch location for her new book because of its mission centered on birding, habitat education, and conservation, an ideal match for the book’s focus on the origins and evolution of the conservation movement in Texas. The program, A Conversation with Wild Women for Good, will feature a panel discussion with eight women: Valarie Bristol, Joy Hester, Colleen Hook, Madge Lindsay, Martha G. Martinez, Marisa Oliva-Rodriguez, Carolyn Vogel, and author Jennifer Bristol. Together, they will share personal stories, insights, and perspectives on conservation efforts across the state. Texas’s conservation movement began in the 1890s when a group of young women in Galveston organized to protect birds threatened by the feather trade in the fashion industry. Bristol’s book traces this legacy forward, exploring more than 130 years of conservation leadership from species protection and habitat preservation to clean water advocacy and community-driven policy initiatives. While women have long been at the forefront of conservation in Texas, many of their stories have remained largely untold until now. Jennifer L. Bristol is also the author of “Parking Lot Birding: A Fun Guide to Discovering Birds in Texas” and “Cemetery Birding: An Unexpected Guide to Discovering Birds in Texas.” She contributed to her father’s book, “Texas State Parks: The First 100 Years 1923–2023” and co-founded and now directs the Victor Emanuel Nature Scholarship Fund, which helps send teens to birding camps. Bristol has served on several civic and environmental boards in Austin and Travis County and currently resides in Austin with her husband, five dogs, and three horses. In addition to the panel discussion, guests will enjoy live music along with wine and beer provided by El Nopalito: Desposito and coffee and treats from Kreative Grounds, available for purchase. Attendees will also have the opportunity to meet the author and have books signed. Tickets are $5 online at quintamazatlan.ticketleap.com. History is deep in the Valley, and so many of our communities continue to keep that history alive in their décor and events they have throughout the year. I invite you to try something new, visit a place you haven’t been to yet, or learn about the city you live in. When driving around the Valley while things were shut down, I was able to visit many museums and outdoor areas. It was a delight to learn about the cemeteries in Brownsville, Palo Alto Battlefield, and Fort Brown (all in Brownsville). But it was also neat to see the many churches throughout the Valley, many of them have been around for 100 years or more. It was nice to go and enjoy the stillness of the nature and really hear the sounds of the life around me. So, take some time while you are visiting the Valley and get out enjoy those sites around you. We have quite the list in our Rio Grande Valley Visitors Guide that you can find online at our website under digital editions.

Having to move brought them back to Trail’s End where they had played regularly in the past. The band is operating on the programming and scheduling plans set by the late Roger Steiger, who had been managing the group for a long time. He passed away last summer and Aldrich, a sax, flute, clarinet and piano player, said the band is planning a tribute show to honor Mr. Steiger at all three venues on February 9, 11 and 14. Aldrich had performed in dance bands in Iowa for 40 years and was in the Dick Dale’s-Lawrence Welk orchestra last performance. He has had his school jazz band music published. Aiding Aldrich in managing the band is accordionist John Kujda, who lives full-time in Weslaco and joined the group in 2016. He was a Sears repairman for 32 years, but found time to play with various polka bands, including Frankie Yankovic and Myron Floren from the Lawrence Welk orchestra. He was also part-owner of the Dick Macko Big Band in Minnesota. Kujda’s wife, Joyce, is the emcee for the jams, announcing the performing order and any other important notes. The band was formed some 30 years ago and was larger then with six saxophones, a half-dozen trumpets, three or four trombones and a keyboard, according to singer Ann Butler. The Canadian from Manitoba, who lives at McAllen’s Paradise Park, has sung with the band since its early days. Her late husband was a sax player with bands for 20 years when not farming. Butler, who has been a soloist in festivals and choral groups, is one BIG BAND From pg. 1 of several featured singers with the band. Jane Kumor, a percussionist from Illinois living at Casa Del Valle RV Resort in Alamo, has been singing as part of the big band group for the past 15 years. She started performing early in several bands organized by her late husband. Kumor, who was a first-grade schoolteacher for 35 years, also was a performer with her husband on a Mississippi riverboat out of Moline, IL for 10 years. A number of the musicians also are singers such as guitarist Andy Anderson, formerly from Wisconsin, where he was with the National Park Service and is now living fulltime at Paradise Park in McAllen. Anderson, who likes to promote the band, offers songs that often have a humorous story attached. Drummer Kim Koppelman, who also plays trombone and piano, has been playing and singing with bands since high school in North Dakota. He was a band director for a short time but has owned an advertising agency for 43 years. Koppelman, who lives in La Feria, was a North Dakota legislator for 28 years, retiring when he was speaker of the state house. He has been with this band for four years and laughed about his figuring how to “join by invitation.” Staying in Pharr’s Southgate Subdivision, Pat Arguello is known for use of several trumpets and sings too, with 17 years in big bands. From North Dakota, she began playing in her dad’s band, Ray Groom & His Band, while in junior high school. While working 40 years as a pattern maker in the garment industry, with 25 years in Chicago, she managed to play in concert bands and church praise bands and here in the RGV she was part of Sonic’s Rock n’ Roll Band. Another member, Manitoba, Canadian, Don Pritchard, is a guitarist and singer with the big band for 16 years. Pritchard, who stays at Paradise Park in McAllen, started out in 1964, playing in a rock n’ roll Trophy Gardens pickleball story clarification A resident from Winter Ranch RV brought something to our attention regarding a story that was published in our January 21st issue. The story was about a ribbon cutting event that was held for pickleball courts at Trophy Gardens. The story said a Trophy Gardens resident started playing pickleball at some courts that were on the street at the neighboring park Winter Ranch. We were informed this was the case during COVID, that Winter Ranch had made a temporary outdoor area where residents could still play the sport during lockdown. The resident wanted to make sure readers knew that Winter Ranch has had indoor pickleball courts for quite some time. The park does have two very nice pickleball courts inside their enormous Friendship Hall that they have had for many years, said the Winter Ranch resident of 10 years. band and was in two more over the years. He also played for 10 years in a dance band, took 10 years off before coming to the RGV in 2009. During his time in the Valley, he was involved in big band, rock n’ roll and country music. He was in chemical sales for 23 years after a 10-year stint as a teacher. He also had a home repair business. The newest band member who came this season is Earl “Mac” McGill, staying at Pharr South Park. He is playing tenor saxophone, with his first sax acquired at an auction when he was 13 years old. McGill was in the U.S. Army, which included a tour to Germany with the regimental band. He was also part of the Iowa Military Veterans Band, a one of a kind. He also owned a restaurant in Grandview Iowa. A few other regulars include bass and tuba player Dennis Schweibert and trumpet players Del Hickey and Marlyn Krueger. Several band members are branching out into a Jazz Night performance on Saturdays from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Sinatra Restaurant in McAllen. The quartet includes Aldrich, Kumer, Ginny Schmidt and Koppelman.

Being winners in 2025, they were also nominated in 2024 and again this year. They were also inducted into the Midwest All-Music Association Hall of Fame in 2024. The duo is John and Teresa Condon. They play country and rock classics for various occasions including town celebrations, weddings, anniversaries, local wineries and bars. Buck Hollow Band has been performing in the Valley Winter Texan community for four years. They have 35 years of experience though and have performed over 4,000 shows. The duo guarantees a fun and entertaining experience that will get people dancing. Teresa plays bass guitar while John builds and plays his one-ofa-kind custom-built guitars, and they both sing. They use meticulously crafted drum tracks, created by John who is also a drummer. They also use no other back or karaoke tracks of any kind. They play their guitars and sing every note. Their playlist includes legendary artists like Elvis Presley, Patsy Cline, The Beatles, Buddy Holly, Dwight Yoakum, Neal Diamond, Loretta Lynn, Jimmy Buffet, The Oak Ridge Boys, Dolly Parton, George Strait, Brooks and Dunn, Dire Straits, and the Georgia Satellites. The Buck Hollow Band focuses on getting people onto the dance floor and keeping them there. They only take short breaks after long sets to keep their crowd happy. John can usually be seen playing one of his own guitar creations. He says he is not a luthier, but he knows just enough to construct playable props. He was a high school shop teacher for 20 years in Decorah, Iowa. He made his first guitar when a student wanted to make one for himself on a CNC router they had. He found a love making guitars and takes his motivation directly from bands like Cheap Trick, ZZ Top, and Prince – who all used unique and sometimes comical custom guitars. You can find out more about The Buck Hollow Band on their website at www.buckhollowband.com, where you can find their schedule and more about John’s guitars. You can also stay up to date with them on Facebook. We look forward to seeing what they bring to our stage on Wednesday, February 11. Buck Hollow Band. (Courtesy photo)
