Today is the Valley Star Awards. This is a chance to see six great Wintertainers™ perform in one place. And the bonus is, you get to find out who the winners are before the rest of our readers. We have a great lineup of entertainment. Entertainers for this year’s Valley Star Awards are Mayham Comedy, AH Illusions, Buck Hollow Band, Julia Lane Cooper, Jamie Layton, and Vinyl Spin. Four of these Wintertainers™ won awards last year. Where else can you see six entertainers for such a low price. By Carina A. Brunson Twenty-five tables were decorated in different themes at the Main Hall at Fun N Sun last week as the Rio Grande Valley Red Hat Queen Council held their Festival of Tables. It was a day filled with seeing old friends and making new ones. It was a sea of red hats and purple regalia – although there was one younger pink hatter in the crowd. The festival is held every year, typically at the beginning of February. As every week, I do hope you are having a great time here in south Texas. The Rio Grande Valley is a great place to be. I am sure you have found some hidden treasures while making your rounds throughout the Valley – at least I hope so. Many people enjoy the hole in the wall restaurants, the little shops that dot the downtowns of many Valley cities, and the many parks throughout the Valley as well. We don’t only have the state parks, refuges, and birding and nature centers, most cities have their very own parks that are fun to go to as well. Many cities also have great trails. Attendance has more than doubled since the first event in 2023. She went on to say that they are so grateful for the incredible support from the RGV community. “Your enthusiasm is what keeps this tradition thriving.” The RGV Line Dance Bash is open to the public and this was its fourth year. This year it was held on January 25 at Tropic Star RV Resort. Tickets were sold for $5. Concessions were available and attendees were able to bring their own beverage and snacks. They had door prizes that were donated from Valley communities and parks. This year’s theme was “Wild Thing” with jungle theme decorations. Jungle theme attire was completely optional. Tables were d e c o r a t e d with green and yellow tablecloths. The event was put on by Pat Yoder and Julie Johnson. Yoder is a fulltime resident at Pharr South and was the previous event coordinator for the first two years of the event. Johnson is a Winter Texan from Tropic Star and is a talented instructor in the Valley and up North. The dance playlist for the event consisted of ultra beginner level to improver, majority were beginner level. The dance selection represented those danced in the Valley, commonly danced at the musician entertainer events and with instructors’ input. Favorites this season are Choosin’ Texas Stomp, Texas Girls, Twenty-Two, Hoedown, and A Bar Song. Many of them volunteer their time with their entertainment for local fundraisers too. And we know how much you go out and support them at the parks and other locales. The awards show is a way to show our, and your, appreciation for the time they spend here. I hope you come out and see who wins, especially the coveted Entertainer of the Year Award. If I don’t see you there, have a good day, good afternoon, good evening and good night. This year’s categories for the awards are Male Vocalist; Female Vocalist; Duet Musical Group; Concert Choir or Band; Individual or Small Band; Novelty, Comedy, or Variety Act; Rock N Roll Band; Family Group; Gospel Group; and Country Band of the Year. There is also the coveted prize of Entertainer/Group of the Year that can be anyone. The Valley Star Awards will be held at Mission Bell Resort in Mission, 1711 E. Bus. 83, from 1 to 4 p.m. Mission Bell will be serving lunch for a reasonable cost beforehand from 12 to 1. There will also be snacks available during the intermission and a 50/50 raffle. There will be tickets available at the door. Tickets are $15. So, if you were still up in the air about what to do this afternoon, swing on by Mission Bell and come to see some great performances and rub shoulders with some of the Valley’s greatest entertainers. VSA From pg. 1 then danced in an inner and outer circle formation. This is a type of Contra dance, which is new to many dancers. This dance consists of dancers facing each other, all doing the same dance steps, but this year it was a moving circle. This year they had an extra-large dance hall, where three dances were taught step-by-step. Learning the dances was an alternative to the open dancing in the main hall. Ranging from eight to 30 years. With 45 dances, the DJ ran the playlist with instructors announcing dance names and music with a one wall demo. There was a split floor, beginners on one end, high beginners on the other, making it easier for the dancers to focus on their dance level version. The organizers hope each person left with new friends, accomplishments and a smile on their face. The instructors have many years of experience teaching dancing back home or in the Valley. They also want to give a huge thanks to those that attended, all the volunteers, cashiers, greeters, the DJ, and everyone that helped out with the sound system, in the kitchen, and with the setup and cleanup. Approximately 14 Valley RV parks were represented, as well as dancers visiting the Valley. There was no definite head count on how many from each park attended, but they do know names of some of the parks that were represented. Some of the parks with members in attendance were Pharr South, Tropic Star, Alamo Country Club, Casa del Valle, Alamo Rose, Trophy Gardens, Llano Grande, Paradise Resort Estates in Pharr, Victoria Palms, Bit-O-Heaven, Oleander Acres RV Resort, Winter Ranch, and Alamo Palms. (Photo by Anastasia Brunson) The Valley hosts many events throughout the year. A favorite among the Valley’s winter visitors is Mission’s Winter Texan Fiesta that takes place in March. (Photo by William Brunson) Whether you prefer nature and the outdoors, historical sites, parks, fishing, boating, or parasailing over the surf at South Padre Island, the Rio Grande Valley has it all. Visitors can enjoy all the Valley has to offer year-round due to the Valley’s mild winter weather. Over 100,000 Winter Texans stay for the winter season to enjoy our warm, subtropical climate with an average temperature of 65-70 degrees. Winter Texans are not the only ones who have discovered the Rio Grande Valley. Birding, butterfly, and nature enthusiasts from all parts of the country come to the Valley every year, attracted by the 545 species of birds and 330 butterfly species that are either native to the area or that migrate through the Valley each year. Because of its neo-tropical climate, the Rio Grande Valley is home to many tropical birds that can be seen nowhere else in the United States. It is also a major bird migration corridor with two major flyways converging here. The Rio Grande Valley is also a place full of history. From battle sites to the only lighthouse on the gulf shores, to museums with artifacts, to chapels, historic homes, and old stores. Every Valley city has a story to tell. Whether you are a Winter Texan, a family with young children, or just someone that enjoys the outdoors, history and culture, the Rio Grande Valley has something to offer everyone. Inside you will find beautiful maps that pinpoint featured locations throughout the Valley. We have broken up the area into eight regions, so whatever area you are visiting, you have a map to see what is close to you. With all there is to see and do in the Rio Grande Valley, we hope you enjoy your stay! The doors opened just before 11 a.m. so you could get your seating assignment – drawn from a basket so you can hopefully sit with someone you don’t know – and walk around to view the many different tables. Queens take time to come up with a theme and buy and decorate their tables according to that theme. I sat at a Mexican themed table this year. It was decorated with the traditional colors, had baskets of Mexican candy, brightly colored pottery plates and table runners, and a wonderful cookbook full of spicy meal ideas. My hostesses were Luann Goldberg and Carole Langlois. As you walked around the room, you could see a Valentine’s Day table of red and white with hearts; a Winter Wonderland themed table; a lemon themed table with lemonade; Elvis; Bumble Bees; Irish table with greens; a brightly colored Mardi Gras table, a patriotic table with U.S. flags and other red, white, and blue items; a minions table that featured a large yellow minion in his blue overalls; a Frosty themed table featuring pastel colored glass Christmas trees; and even a Nebraska themed table. You can tell the ladies put so much effort into their creations. Many use their own decorations they enjoy at home. As soon as this event is done, planning for the following year begins for the coordinators, and for the participants. Sheila Durham, member of the RGV Queens Council, welcomed everyone and said that it was wonderful to look out and see such beautifully decorated, creative tables and so many smiling faces. Standing on stage to start the event, she added that she was thankful that this wasn’t a competition, because it would be very hard to choose just one table as the best. RED HATS From pg. 1 Many of those in attendance are Winter Texans and try to plan ahead on what they are going to do for their table, so they know if it is something they might want to pack when they come back next year or not. The ladies I sat with talked about their events they attend in the Valley and at their summer home. Two of the ladies were very much into drama and putting on plays. They talked about the events they have in their parks with Langlois saying she comes to the Valley to play. The ladies had cupcakes already at their tables – Afterall dessert should be eaten first. Lunch consisted of a delicious chicken salad croissant, mixed veggies with ranch dressing, and a cup of mixed fruit. After lunch, entertainment was provided by Rick McEwen. He performed many of his Kenny Rogers songs and threw in some extras for the group of ladies. Some special songs were Lady in Red, The Twist, and Elvira. Many ladies got up and danced and did line dances. He ended his show with YMCA which had the room of ladies up on their feet participating. The event ended with the raffle prizes and silent auction winners being announced. There were also special prizes drawn for a nice pencil and pen set, some lounge chairs, VSA tickets, and Dolphin Watch Cruises. Plans are already underway for next year’s event. If you would like to stay up to date with the details, we will start announcing when tickets are available, usually in December. You don’t have to be a Red Hatter to attend the event, although it makes it more fun if you come with a group of your friends. Information about becoming a Red Hatter, or making your own group, can be found online at www.redhatsociety.com or you can get in touch The RGV Red Hat Queen Sandy ‘Finny’ Funk at fur-fin-fun@gmail.com. It’s all about having fun with your friends – and eating dessert first.

Longtime resident Anne Gilmer headed the organization committee with many volunteers and began planning this event a year ago. Kudos to all of them! There were contests for best costume and for best decorated table. Prizes were plentiful from people donating something from their home state and winners were drawn from tickets that party goers got upon entering. To say it was spectacular fun is an understatement. The Golden Anniversary weekend included a rehearsal dinner for the 10 honored couples on Saturday night. The celebration started at 2 p.m., with an introduction of each couple, followed by musical selections and a renewal of their vows. Sandi Phillips, one of the anniversary couples, said “It was very special for us and we want to thank all of our friends and neighbors who attended.” A reception of cake and punch followed the event for the 165 resort guests who were in attendance. Rochelle Stoffel, a former participant said, “I was in awe of this special event and amazed at the support of the residents of Tropic Star.” This event was hosted by Tropic Star Activities and powered by over 30 resort volunteers. h s e l A e e e u d e r d , e ’ s s Winterhaven residents enjoy the red, white and blue. It was so great that 43 Kansans joined the group for the first time. The event this year was again at Peter Piper Pizza in Weslaco. As usual, Velma and her team did a great job for this size group. There were many positive comments about this venue–its central location within the Valley and each person’s cost was based on their individual order. This event also allowed more time available for getting to know our Kansas neighbors. Larry Schmitt was the chair of the event and responsible for all communications leading up to the event.
