September 19, 2023- Events Calendar

September 23 – Bentsen State Park will host their 100 Year State Park Celebration Event, Bentsen Outdoor, Skills Showcase. The event will feature numerous outdoor activities for all ages such as camping, fishing, archery, kayaking, wildlife viewing and identification, outdoor health and wellness, and more. It will be a four-hour event from 4 to 8 p.m. ending with a night hike. Admission to the park will be free for the entire day. The park is located at 2800 S. Bentsen Palm Dr. in Mission.

September 23 – Latin Grammy Award-winning Tejano band Elida Reyna y Avante will headline this year’s South Texas Music Festival held at W.H. Heavin Memorial Park in San Benito. Gates open at 4 p.m. Tickets are $5. Texas based Tejano group Ricardo Castillon y La Fierencia will also perform, along with Grammy Award-winning accordionist Rick Fuentes, and local Grupo Azido. A special performance by Mariachi Sol Azteca will kick things off. There will also be a cultural heritage tent that will pay tribute to Conjunto music, which was born in San Benito. September 26 – Natie Plant Project’s speaker will be Janet Schofield, retired math teacher and Texas Master Gardener. The title of Janet’s presentation is “Composting with Hugelkultur.” Mrs. Scholfield’s program will highlight sustainability as the issues of the current century and describe efforts made to develop Hugelkultur here in the Rio Grande Valley. Janet is a Master Gardener in both Cameron and Hidalgo Counties; she brings specialist training in composting and plant propagation. The program will take place at 7:30 p.m. at the Valley Nature Center, 301 S. Border St. in Weslaco, behind Gibson Park. The public is invited. No charge to attend. September 30-October 1 – The 12th Annual Pachanga in the Park will be held in the Laguan Madre Park just off Port Road, right off Highway 100. The event will be held from 3 p.m. to 12 a.m. on Saturday, and 6 to 11 p.m. on Sunday. There will be vendors, food and drinks. Saturday parking will be $10, free on Sunday. Entertainment will be provided by DJ Wero, Ambizzion, Siggno, Infusion and Solido. For more information, call (956) 433-1015.

October 14 - Annual Solar Eclipse will be occuring. Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park will be having a special viewing party from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The eclipse starts at about 10:30 a.m. and will peak at around noon. All are welcome to come out and join in the viewing. Sunglasses are not a safe alternative. Solar/Eclipse glasses will be for sale at the park store, but guests are welcome to bring their own pair. Bentsen State Park is located at 2800 S. Bentsen Palm Dr.
