Throughout the year, there are three senior park communities that continuously offer music jams open to the public musicians and listeners: Green Gate Grove in Palmview, Heritage Square in Mission and Quiet Village II in Donna. Each November, this changes as the Winter Texans leave their Northern habitat and arrive in the RGV. Currently, there are music jams at 53 senior parks that are open to the public.

Brrr! It’s been cold. Too cold for me to go exploring. My South Texas blood is just not ready for winter weather. And was it ever cold and windy at the beach. A few hearty souls walked the beach probably looking for that prize shell that all of us hope to find. Those angry, wind tossed waves surely must have brought a real find to some adventurous soul.

It wasn’t very long ago that shuffleboard was shuffling itself in the wrong direction, not just in the Valley, but around the country.

Not only were fewer Winter Texans taking part in the long-loved sport, but COVID-19 added to its rapid slow-down.

But shufflers are shuffling again, and new shufflers are coming in at a rate not seen in many years.

Santa Maria Bullring presents Cayetano Delgado

This story is the history of one new Mexican matador that will be performing at the Santa Maria Bullring next month.

Cayetano Delgado, born in 1996 to Mexican matador Enrique Delgado Cayetano, grew up in the bullfight world. The icon matador David Renk ‘El Texano’ was his god father. When Cayetano was about 11 he started training to be a novice bullfighter. He had two great teachers, his father and David Renk. At the age of 13 he began a career in the bullfight world. To even consider doing this you need help with money.

Christmas lights were all aglow at Bentsen Grove

20221228 BentsenGrove First Place IMG 8947 webChristmas lights and decorations were hung throughout Bentsen Grove RV Park for the Christmas holidays. Residents took to decorating their winter homes for a chance to win a prize. Winter Texan Times had the honor to help vote for the top three.

Although a lot of park residents had lights up, only 14 residents actually entered the contest. It was very hard to pick a top three. I had several favorites but had to narrow it down quite a bit. I was thankful that I didn’t have a larger group to choose from.

MHM hosting “Turning of the Quilts”

20220126 MHM Quilt Show GU 2683The Mission Historical Museum is accepting entries for its “Turning of the Quilts” program to be offered January 20, 2023. The museum is looking for antique, vintage, or just plain interesting quilts for this program. The quilts are presented stacked on a bed. As each quilt is shown, it is turned down to reveal the next quilt, until all have been presented. A knowledgeable presenter will talk about each quilt as it is shown.

A Christmas party needed a community’s help

Almost 1,000 presents were assembled. Santa was scheduled to appear with his buddy, The Grinch. The photographer was ready. Six hundred children and several dogs were registered online to receive gifts at The Landmark on Tower’s Second Annual Christmas party.

The only thing missing was more good help. Restaurant owner Roel Landa said he didn’t even know how much he needed Santa’s Winter Texan elves.

Texas State Parks kicks off 100-Year Birthday Celebration

Park lovers everywhere are invited to help Texas State Parks begin celebrating 100 years Jan. 1 with a First Day Hike. Almost every Texas State Park will host ranger-guided and self-guided walks, bike rides, paddling trips and polar plunges in honor of the national initiative aimed at getting people outdoors.
