New Monarch Butterfly Conservation license plate available for Texas drivers

AUSTIN — The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) will be launching the long-awaited Monarch Butterfly conservation license plate on June 21 that will raise money to help conserve monarch butterflies and other native Texas, non-game, at-risk species.
“The monarch butterfly is a species that is beautiful and iconic in that it is one of nature’s great migration stories,” said John Davis, TPWD’s Wildlife Diversity Program Director. “This species migrates through Texas from Mexico in the spring making its way to the northern extremes of the U.S. and into Canada, then reverses that feat in the fall to overwinter in Mexico. This great migratory story is in jeopardy with the overwintering population experiencing steep declines in the last decade. By adding the monarch to our family of plates, we hope to increase support for this beautiful migration event and through our conservation efforts, brighten the future for this, and many other species.”

Beginning May 2, 2021, the IMAS has expanded their hours for visitors. The new hours will include Wednesday and Sunday afternoons. Visitors to the museum can enjoy the splendor of exhibits including “The World of Frida” featuring work by both national and international artists inspired by the late Frida Kahlo, “Spectrum Dynamic”, “Mexican and Latin American Folk Art”, and upcoming photography exhibit “Stillness” by Carlos Limas which will open on May 8.

The golf tournament is scheduled for Friday, May 7, at the Shary Municipal Golf Club located on 2201 N. Mayberry Street in Mission. The tournament is held to benefit Mission CISD students.
It is that time of the year once again. Spring has sprung and Keep McAllen Beautiful is spring cleaning the city of McAllen. Keep McAllen Beautiful (KMB) is organizing its annual Great American Clean-Up and Don’t Mess with Texas Trash-Off, but with a different twist this year. Due to the pandemic, there will not be a mass gathering in the park; instead, KMB is asking interested individuals to gather their favorite 5-10 people and create a small group to do a litter clean-up around town.

On April 19, 1970, the “doors to the past” were opened to the 1910 Jail and the rest is history. From that momentous day on, the museum grew from a small county museum (Hidalgo County Historical Museum) to an American Alliance of Museums accredited museum (Museum of South Texas History) with state-of-the-art exhibitions set on a campus encompassing more than a city block. For 50 years, MOSTHistory has had an incredible history of its own, independent of the many stories its on-going exhibits tell. “Golden Memories: Fifty Years of Preserving the Borderland Heritage of the Rio Grande Valley” highlights some of that history and is waiting for visitors to enjoy. This exhibit will close on May 1, 2021.
The Rio Grande Valley has a lot of talented songwriters, some with published songs, some performing their originals in local shows, and some who have yet to showcase their own material. Now, 5X5 Brewing will host a series of singer/songwriter sessions, creating a unique and audience-interactive venue for artists to showcase their own original songs and the inspirations behind them.
