The seasons may change but one thing doesn’t – the Texas Quilt Museum will always have interesting and unique exhibits which change out quarterly. Their fall displays include Fascinating Rhythm: Art Quilts by Katie Pasquini Masopust and Mama’s Got the Blue. They will both be on display until December 22.
“With Fascinating Rhythm, we are delighted to host a major retrospective featuring 32 quilts that showcase the astonishing talent of Katie Pasquini Masopust. She has touched the creative lives of many hundreds of quilters around the globe,” Museum curator Dr. Sandra Sider says.
Trained as a painter, Pasquini Masopust thinks of her quilting as lines of drawing on a flexible surface, giving her greater artistic potential than would be possible with a stretched canvas. Her very popular workshops feature the Log Cabin block, and the numerous floral quilts in this exhibit illustrate her love of nature.
Dr. Sider adds “Katie is deeply immersed in quilts as a contemporary art form, continuing to influence others with her generosity of spirit and amazingly original talent.”
The Museum will also offer a monograph about Katie’s life and work, featuring several of her quilts and their backgrounds.
The other fall exhibit, Mama’s Got the Blues, will feature 22 quilts (all blue-and-white) originally collected by Merry Silber, the mother of noted antique quilt collector and dealer Julie Silber. The exhibit is guest curated by Vicki Mangum, Museum Registrar and Exhibit Designer.
“This collection is a loving and historical representation of the love of antique quilts shared by mother and daughter. Quilts on display include a very noteworthy WCTU (Women’s Christian Temperance Union) Sampler quilt, circa 1880,” Mangum says.
She adds that those who love blue-and-white quilts will be able to see hundreds of them suspended from the ceiling in a very special exhibit, “Sapphire Celebration,” at the upcoming International Quilt Festival in Houston, October 31-November 3.
