20150304 Canada vs USA Softball KO 7812 webThe 29th season for the Ed Martens Senior Texan Softball League is quickly coming to an end for more than 100 local and Winter Texan senior men and women all over 55 years old. The season began with practice in early November through December. Players were then divided into ten teams between two divisions and competed in a 15-game regular season.

The final event of our season is the 16th annual Can-Am Games comprised of senior men and women teams who will represent Canada and the USA in this fun and friendly competition. The prize? Bragging rights of course but also to have their country proudly engraved as the 2024 winner on the beautiful Can-Am trophy donated by the City of McAllen Parks and Recreation Department.

Bring your own flags and banners to show your pride. Maybe catch a home run or two. Last year Canada won 9-7 in the A League. Two years ago, the USA team won 8 to 5 with two home runs, one over the fence at 310 feet.

Ed Martens said, “Come join the fun, refreshments, and senior softball at its best. This is a friendly game between two friendly countries.”

He added that this year there are two players who played pro baseball, so it will be a game to see.
“It’s not a win or lose,” said Ed. “Let’s just have fun.”

Spectators can choose one of our USA or Canada flags so they can cheer and wave their respective team on to victory. In addition, free door prize tickets will also be handed out. These tickets will be drawn between innings so lucky fans can also win food, prizes, and more.

This years Can-Am Games will again be held at the City of McAllen’s Westside Park, located at 1000 S. Ware Rd. directly across from the McAllen Convention Center.

Come to the game and have some fun. Consider playing next fall and winter. You can join the fun league any time you arrive in the Valley. Ladies are welcome.

“We have a spot for you,” said Ed. “We welcome all new players, men, and women whether you played softball for 30 years or if you’ve never played before, we have a spot for you!”
