Little Girl Donating 2012 9 24 webDuring this holiday season, The Salvation Army staff and volunteers are diligently working to raise much needed funds to support those most in need this Christmas, and beyond. This year, The Salvation Army seeks to raise $175,000 to meet the growing demand for essential services in the McAllen community and is falling behind its goal.

Every year, The Salvation Army of McAllen provides shelter, meals, emergency financial assistance, clothing vouchers, food boxes, disaster assistance and more to individuals and local families. The holiday season can be especially difficult for many, and donations are crucial to ensuring that no one is left behind during this time of year.

“The holiday season brings unique challenges for many in our community, but it also brings out the generosity of those who can help,” said Major Frankie Zuniga, with The Salvation Army of McAllen. “Every donation, no matter the size, is a step toward lifting someone out of hardship and it is important to remember that every dollar given stays local, helping your neighbors in need, right here in McAllen. Your generous support helps bring hope and stability to those who need it most — not just during Christmas but also throughout the entire year.”
Funds raised during the holiday season support initiatives like the Angel Tree program, which provides clothes and toys to children and seniors. Donations also help provide year-round aid such as rent, utility, and housing assistance for individuals facing financial hardship.

“We are currently falling behind our fundraising goal and ask the community and local businesses to help us in the remaining two weeks of the red kettle campaign. The economy is challenging for many right now, and perhaps you are not in the financial position to give what you might have done in the past,” said Zuniga. “A wonderful way to help The Salvation Army is to volunteer and ring the bell, and it costs nothing. We desperately need bell ringers and would love to set you up with an apron and bell and have you ring for a couple of hours. You can ring for two hours, a morning or afternoon, or the entire day. Best of all, you’ll be making a difference in the lives of people you will probably never meet, who come to The Salvation Army every day for help.”
