On Tuesday, January 27, 108 Kansans from all over the Rio Grande Valley met for lunch to commemorate the anniversary of the state’s January 29, 1861, admission to the Union. It was so great that 43 Kansans joined the group for the first time.
The event this year was again at Peter Piper Pizza in Weslaco. As usual, Velma and her team did a great job for this size group. There were many positive comments about this venue–its central location within the Valley and each person’s cost was based on their individual order. This event also allowed more time available for getting to know our Kansas neighbors.
Larry Schmitt was the chair of the event and responsible for all communications leading up to the event. Betty Guder took charge of all decorations and the reservation tables. Organizers also thank the volunteers that facilitated the decorations, registration and distribution of the door prizes. We are also thankful to some of the attendees who brought door prizes.
Finally, we commend Rusty Ryerson for taking charge of the MC role and providing fun entertainment. Rusty has an array of songs and jokes to bring much laughter to the event. Thanks again, Rusty for an outstanding performance.
Plans for the 2027 celebration are in progress. Mark your calendars for Tuesday, January 26, 2027. If Larry has your contact information, you’re set. If not, please email your contact information to Larrys13@icloud.com.
