Celebrate the health of your skeleton at Quinta Mazatlán

With Halloween season, spooky skeletons are seen everywhere except at Quinta Mazatlán. The opening of the Sticks and Bones Trail shows the not-so-spooky side of skeletons. Visit this outdoor educational exhibit through the woods, open through November 14. Visitors will learn through signage, fun outdoor exhibits, and a scavenger hunt sheet. Remember your small gift bag upon completing the hunt and remember to dress for the season and laugh outdoors.

Community altars celebrate Día de los Muertos at IMAS

C Altar Kaplana Chawla IMAS altar 2020 The International Museum of Art & Science (IMAS) invites the community to celebrate Día de los Muertos by visiting the altars exhibit honoring individuals of color who led the way in art and science fields. Community members are also invited to submit photos of their own altars to be featured in a virtual exhibit.

The community altar exhibit includes seven colorful ofrendas on display at the IMAS through November 14. Six partnering organizations were invited to create an altar to honor the life and career of important creators and experts.

UTRGV Center for Latin American Arts created an altar for iconic fashion designer Oscar de la Renta with hand-painted skulls by UTRGV MFA alumna Angelica Rodriguez. The Boys & Girls Club of McAllen honored prolific artist Frida Kahlo with a vibrant display. Mission Historical Museum’s altar is a tribute to the famous Mexican illustrator José Guadalupe Posada.

McAllen to celebrate Fiesta de Palmas

Fiesta palmas Entertainers City of McAllen and the McAllen Convention Center Facilities announced its first major public event will be celebrated in a reimagined new normal. Fiesta de Palmas, presented by Reliant, will be celebrated this weekend, Saturday, November 7 and Sunday, November 8, at Oval Park at the McAllen Convention Center, 700 Convention Center Boulevard. The event will feature social distanced, drive-through, curbside and virtual activities.

Mission to host second Veterans Day Fest

mission veterans day 02 20201021 Each year, thousands of people unite to commemorate Veterans Day, a holiday that honors all those who have served the country in war or peace. This year, the City of Mission is honoring local military heroes with a Veterans’ Appreciation BBQ Saturday, Nov. 7. The drive-thru event at Mission Event Center will feature a chicken plate with all the trimmings, while supplies last.

“We want to make sure our community recognizes the true meaning behind Veterans Day,” Mayor Dr. Armando O’Caña said. “We must honor the men and women who have sacrificed for our freedom. I wish we could host our second annual parade, but the safety of our community is first and foremost so we had to change things up this year to take the necessary coronavirus precautions.”

Mission Food Park open for business

mfp 02 The all-new Mission Food Park hosted its grand opening this past weekend and is looking forward to serving the community. Mission Food Park, powered by the Mission EDC, is located at the CEED building on Bryan Road and U.S. Business 83. The site is the permanent location of Jitterz coffee bar and local brewery 5x5 Brewing Co., which will be operating during the food park hours. The food park will host a variety of food trucks including Queenie, Motoramen, Sahadi’s, and Pineapple Ninjaz.

During these times, UTRGV Patron of the Arts has been even more aware of the important role the arts play in our lives as they help nourish our hearts and minds.

STC Theatre goes virtual

stc theatre South Texas College Theatre has taken a leap into the virtual world this season.

While patrons cannot come together in the college’s beloved performance spaces at the moment, STC Theatre have figured out creative ways to produce some innovative and entertaining productions for folks to watch in the comfort of their own home, or wherever their desire to see theatre strikes them.
