San Benito Ray Stewart release webThe holidays are in full sing in San Benito, and the 81st Annual Christmas Parade set for 6 p.m. Saturday, December 9, is the highlight of the season.

The theme of this year’s parade is “Christmas at The Movies,” and the procession will run along Sam Houston Blvd. southward from Hicks St. to Swanson St.
Keeping with the Hollywood theme, this year’s grand marshal is actor and San Benito native Ray Stewart, who may be best remembered for portraying recurring character Darryl Driscoll on the TV comedy series “Barney Miller.”

“I am thrilled and honored to be this year’s grand marshal, said Stewart, who has resided in San Benito since the 1980s after living, and successfully working as an actor on stage and screen in New York and Los Angeles for more than three decades. “It’s ironic because a few years ago, I drove the convertible that carried the grand marshal in the parade, and now, here I am the grand marshal!”

More than 80 entrants are expected to participate, including marching bands, car clubs, horse clubs, and plenty of festive floats.

In addition, several vendors will be on hand selling food, beverages, and other tasty treats.
