Quinta Mazatlán is excited to welcome Odyssey Jazz Quartet and RGV Jazz Collective for a live jazz performance followed by a Jam Session, Thursday, December 28, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on the North Lawn at Quinta Mazatlán. Join us for live music, food, a native plant sale and nature activities for a family friendly atmosphere. If you’re a musician, bring your instrument to join the band during the Open Jam Session.

RGV Jazz Collective is a nonprofit whose mission is to support and promote jazz music and musicians to establish the jazz community in the Rio Grande Valley. In their effort to facilitate musicians’ growth in jazz, the collective hosts monthly workshops and open jazz jams in the Valley.

But what is a “Jam?” Jazz music and its pivotal innovation were born out of jam sessions. During the swing era, musicians began playing for each other during informal gatherings after hours, then emerged an entire musical language. Jams offer a space which welcomes the musical abilities and sensitivities of individual performers and their interactions. This interactive, communicative element is an essential part of jazz music.
